With the one-year anniversary of the PlayStation 5 fast approaching, the number of new PS4 games is gradually starting to die down. Games like God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West will be available on Sony's latest system from the get-go, rather than requiring a next-gen update in the months following their release.

Next-gen patches have certainly shown their value though, having already helped to completely transform some of the PS4's biggest titles when played on the console's successor. In fact, there are plenty of great PS4 Games that still need a next-gen patch, including one or two of the system's highest-rated and best-selling titles.

10 Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 world

Considering its status as the joint highest-rated PS4 game on Metacritic, it's a little surprising that Red Dead Redemption 2 still hasn't received a next-gen patch. Rockstar has been fairly vocal about its plans to release GTA V for the PS5 and Series X, after all, but remains tight-lipped regarding the future of the game's western-themed counterpart.

In the developer's defense, RDR2 still looks fantastic even by modern standards and looks better still when combined with the raw power of the PS5. A next-gen version could still happen, but it's understandable why Rockstar would choose to focus its attention on the eight-year-old GTA V first.

9 Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 Plan B Gun

Buried beneath the seemingly endless bugs and glitches in Cyberpunk 2077 beats the heart of a fantastic game. When everything is working the way it's supposed to, it looks truly stunning and Night City is a delightful, albeit slightly terrifying place for players to explore. As of the moment, however, the game's next-gen patch is nowhere to be found.

In a recent earnings call, CD Projekt Red revealed that PS5 and Xbox Series versions of the game could be pushed back into 2022. Fans will be hoping that the developer can still meet its late 2021 target, but, given the current state of the game and the recent comments, it's looking increasingly unlikely.

8 Monster Hunter: World

Monster Hunter World Coop Solo Weapon Tier LIst

Monster Hunter: World already looks fantastic, which arguably makes the prospect of a next-gen update even more appealing. The additional power of the PS5 would allow Capcom to crank up the settings to the absolute max, while the console's faster memory would no doubt allow for increased draw distance as well.

Thanks to the game's PS4 Pro patch, PS5 owners can already play Monster Hunter: World at 1800c and a buttery-smooth 60 frames per second. This may explain why Capcom is in no real rush to release a next-gen patch right now, though that's not to say that players wouldn't still appreciate one.

7 Bloodborne

Bloodborne game cover

Rumors of a next-gen version of Bloodborne have been circulating for quite some time now. The most recent, which claims that a remaster known as the "Hunter's Edition" is currently in the works, may actually end up being bad news for those hoping for a simple performance patch on PS5.

Given the age of the game, a full remaster arguably makes sense, though the likelihood of this being offered to owners of the PS4 version as a free upgrade is all but zero. That said, if it ends up being anywhere near as good as the Demon's Souls remake, they likely won't be too bothered by having to purchase the game again.

6 Fallout 4

Dogmeat and the Sole Survivor in Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is another old game that could do with a new coat of paint. It's starting to show its age a little on console now, though, with the right mods installed, the PC release can still look great. It therefore stands to reason that a next-gen patch could do the same for the console ports.

Skyrim, another Bethesda title, will soon be coming to the PS5, meaning that it will have been released across three different console generations. This shows that the publisher is working on modernizing some of its last-gen titles and will serve as a source of hope for those counting on a next-gen patch for Fallout 4.

5 Street Fighter V

street fighter 5: champion edition review

Considering Capcom's history of releasing updated versions of its Street Fighter games, it's a little surprising that a next-gen version of Street Fighter V hasn't already been released. At the very least, one might expect a PS5 patch, but there's evidence to suggest that players may not be getting one.

Neither the base, Arcade, nor Champion edition of the game received enhancements for the PS4 Pro, which doesn't bode well for the prospect of a PS5 patch. There have been rumors suggesting that Capcom is currently working on three new Street Fighter games though, so this may not be too much of an issue.

4 Tekken 7

humble bundle may 2021

The Tekken series has come a long way since making its debut on the PS1 back in 1994, with many now considering Tekken 7 and Mortal Kombat 11 to be at the top of the pile when it comes to fighting games. While the latter received a next-gen patch back in November of 2020 though, Tekken 7 remains very much last-gen.

Given that the game first hit arcades in 2015, some believe that the series' next installment could be on the way sooner rather than later. This might explain why a next-gen patch has failed to materialize, though that doesn't make its absence any less frustrating for those still playing Tekken 7 on console today.

3 Persona 5 Royal

Persona-5-Royal-cast

Persona 5 Royal is tied for the position of the highest-rated non-Rockstar game on the PS4. With this in mind, it's perhaps a little surprising that a PS5 patch for the game hasn't already been released. That's not to say that there aren't still some benefits of playing the title on Sony's latest system though.

While playing on PlayStation 5, the game loads up in just 4.21 seconds, which is more than twice as fast as on the PS4 Pro. Even so, a 60 fps patch (or one that unlocked the frame rate entirely) would take the game to the next level. Persona 5 started life as a PS3 game, after all, so it's not like the PS5 couldn't handle it.

2 Uncharted 4

uncharted 4 box art

Uncharted 4 is a visually stunning game with some of the best storytelling on the PlayStation 4. Unfortunately, however, the single-player campaign is locked to 30 frames per second and this remains the case even when playing the game on the PS5.

In early 2021, an unofficial patch, which could only be installed onto jailbroken consoles, showed that it is possible to play the game on a PS4 at 60 frames per second (albeit, at lower resolution). Given the increased processing power of the PS5 though, 1080p 60fps should be possible and would definitely improve the experience.

1 Resident Evil 7

resident-evil-7

There have been plenty of rumors about an impending next-gen patch for Resident Evil 7, though, at the time of writing, nothing official has been confirmed. The last-gen releases already support 1260p at a solid 60 frames per second, so it's perhaps understandable why Capcom doesn't seem to be in too much of a hurry to release a patch. That's not to say that the game doesn't need one though.

When compared to the PC port of the game, the PS4 version comes up short in numerous areas. For one thing, it doesn't support native 4K resolution, and many of the textures are nowhere near as high-quality as the ones found in the PC release. Whether or not Capcom will ever rectify this, however, remains to be seen.
