Remember earlier this week when Spike TV's Geoff Keighley promised a PS3 exclusive we wouldn't believe at the Spike Video Game Awards? Well, that game has been revealed as The Last of Us, and sports one of the creepiest teaser trailers in recent memory.
Unfortunately, little is actually known about the game and the teaser trailer itself only contains footage from real life riots and global catastrophes. Looking at the trailer, one can see references to quarantine zones, people wearing masks as well as scenes of people attacking police. Guessing by the trailer, it's most likely that The Last of Us may have something to do with a global infection.
The masks could denote a disease, with the moments featuring police showing civil unrest. The game's title may also represent a clue as it could refer to the people left over from the disease. This is probably the case as the YouTube version of the trailer contains the tags "humanity," "martial law" and "end of civilization."
That theory might seem sound but it gets a tad more complicated when one heads over to the official The Last of Us website and sees a video of an ant walking around a plant. No clue what that means, but it could be that if the game is disease focused, the ants could play a part in spreading the infection.

One YouTube commenter suggested that the game could be about cordyceps - a type of parasitic fungus. I'll leave you to look it up yourself, as the description of what it does is kind of gross, but there is a certain strain of cordyceps that "causes ants to climb a plant and attach there before they die," which can be seen happening in the second video. This theory is also backed up by the fact the game's website features pictures of fungi in the background and the fact that the trailer is also tagged as cordyceps on Youtube.
Cordyceps also has certain medicinal uses, and is primarily found in Asian countries. It sounds like the game could then feature a medicinal experiment gone wrong as the basis for its dystopian setting, though it's hard to tell based on the teaser alone.
In any case, we'll find out more about The Last of Us at the Spike Video Game Awards.
