Starcraft 2 fans disappointed that they will not get a chance to play as the Protoss or Zerg in the campaign of the upcoming Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty now have half of their problem solved. According to a post from Xordiah, a member of Blizzard’s RTS Community Team in Blizzard Europe, there will be missions in the Terran campaign where players will take control of Protoss forces.

“I won’t go into details, since we don’t give out information on the campaign of StarCraft 2, but I can confirm that there will be a Protoss mini-campaign that lets you control Protoss units. This part of the campaign mode is of course way shorter than the Terran part, but it is very fun to have a very different playstyle to add even more variety to the game. I am sure every Protoss fan will love this part of the Campaign!”

Players hoping to get the full Protoss experience without going online will be disappointed to find out that will not be the case. Xordiah continues her post to explain that the campaign and multiplayer experiences are intended to be very different:

“That being said, the Protoss mini-campaign will not prepare you for the multiplayer as Protoss, you won’t be using all units or getting to know buildings and upgrades. In general, even for Terran, it is not the objective of the singleplayer to show how to play the game effectively, it is to tell a story and do a lot of fun things, that would not be possible in multiplayer. The Challenges, mini-missions, that ask you to complete a very specific task, are more suited to give players the opportunity to learn how to use the units and how to play the game.”

Then to clear up any confusion the original post may have caused, Xordiah followed up today with another post that stated:

“Just to clarify, this is not a separate campaign set apart from the Terran campaign. These are missions in the campaign where you play as Protoss.”

Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty is due sometime this year, but Blizzard has yet to commit to a release date. Two expansions are expected to follow with Heart of the Swarm being the first one and Legacy of the Void being the second. Both expansions will add content to the multiplayer experience of Starcraft 2 as well as providing campaigns for the Zerg and Protoss races respectively.

Are you excited to fight alongside and take control of some Protoss units in the Terran campaign?

  1. I suppose this will tide us over while we wait to play the campaign with the best race.
They are definitely releasing these in order of most boring to most interesting race to play. Terran are boring, but it’s been forever since Starcraft so we’re dying to play it and we’ll probably buy the follow ups for the new units for multiplayer and extended campaigns just like we bought Brood Wars back in the day.

  2. Breaking the game up into 3 seperate games is highly rediculous. I for one wont be buying any version just to make a point. Warcraft 2 in my opinion was the best game blizzard ever made. wc3 fail, starcraft was fun….for awhile. WoW WAS good..until they dumbed it down for all the casual tards out there.
Now this, sooo 50-60 bucks for a third of the game, then oh wait here come the zerg…please toss another 50-60 bucks. Repeat for the Protoss.
Way to go money hungry folks at Blizz
