While Valve may be more interested in creating new games that have better options for monetization, its fanbase is more than happy to support Valve's classic franchises in its stead. Case in point Portal 2, a very popular sequel to an already popular puzzle game. Valve's lack of interest in continuing the Portal franchise will be capitalized on by modders, however. Case in point Emberspark Games' upcoming Portal 2 mode Desolation.

The Emberspark Games modding team has released a new trailer for its upcoming Desolation project. Desolation is said to offer a more grounded and unsettling storyline compared to Valve's Portal games. Players will immediately see in the trailer that the portal gun appears to have been grafted onto the protagonist's arm. For the duration of this trailer, however, all that's shown is one of the game's excitingly complicated puzzles.

As would be expected of any Portal mod, Desolation will employ all of the tools that the original game offered. There will be launch pads, goo, companion cubes, and even some new features like sticky gel that allows players to walk on ceilings. Altogether, Desolation is said to feature 6-8 hours of gameplay with as many as 40-50 different test chambers for players to solve along the way.

Desolation is a mod project that's been in development for over four years. While that may not be long for a modding project, it's also not unfair to say such projects often never come to fruition. Desolation looks to be one of the projects that succeeds through sheer long-term determination. No release date has yet to be announced, but the team is clearly closer to the finish line than its ever been.

Portal 2's Desolation mod is in development for PC.
