Now that Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield have been available for several weeks, the Pokemon community is starting to discover some interesting tricks and secrets. That is to say that Pokemon Sword and Shield players are figuring out ways to completely glitch the games out. Not every glitch is useful, but most glitches are at the very least interesting. Such is the case with this newly discovered Pokemon Sword and Shield glitch that allows players to evolve Pokemon still in an egg.

Eggs in Pokemon Sword and Switch can't typically be interacted with in the game. They're intended to simply take up a party slot until the player has moved around enough that the egg hatches. But Pokemon Sword and Switch players have figured out a way to work around this limitation. The glitch allows players to use all manner of items on the Pokemon egg, and the unhatched Pokemon within. That includes giving them new moves or even evolving them.

The glitch requires a bit of set-up. First, the player needs to put a fully evolved Pokemon in the first slot of their party. It can be almost any Pokemon, though some may not work. Then the player will need both the Pokemon in an egg and the Pokemon it was based on. Yes, the limitations of the glitch should already be somewhat apparent. Nevertheless, here's the first part of the glitch. Order the three Pokemon with the evolved Pokemon first, the egg second, and the original Pokemon last. To use an item, like a new move, on the egg, select the first Pokemon and press "A" and then "Down" as quick as possible. The glitch will let the move be activated on the first Pokemon, but will adjust down to the egg instead.

To evolve a Pokemon, the glitch gets even weirder. First, the original Pokemon that the egg is based on should be moved to the second slot and the egg to the third. The original Pokemon should also have enough experience that it will evolve with the next level, the next experience item used on it. Then, in the same fashion as before, press "A" and "Down" quickly on the first, evolved Pokemon. It will shift the item down, read the evolution of the original Pokemon, and then somehow shift the evolution down to the egg.

The usefulness of this new Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield glitch is unclear. Whether or not players will find it useful to have level 1 evolutions of certain Pokemon will depend entirely on each trainer and their intentions. As is ever the case with games like Pokemon, the more glitches that are discovered the more interesting things players are able to do by combining them. Who knows what players will be able to figure out off of the back of this new glitch?

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are available now exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
