Pokemon Scarlet and Violet were released amidst several critiques due to the reported issues with performance and graphics, as well as some technical problems that are causing visual bugs or even shiny-duplication glitches. Still, while the dust has yet to settle, many players are happy with the game's incredible open world, which provides a lot of content in and of itself due to how exploration works and how frequently Tera Raid battles or solitary Tera Pokemon can be found in Paldea. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Terastallization is also a big aspect of the game, as notable trainers and the main character alike can use this phenomenon to change their Pokemon's type or make them stronger with a same-type Terastallization.

Great examples of how notable characters use Terastallization come from Academy teachers and, more importantly, from the various Gym Leaders in Paldea. In fact, every Gym Leader in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has access to Terastallization, which they all take advantage of in order to make their non-type-specific Pokemon share the same type of their Gym, instead. Because there is no level scaling in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, players can expect all Paldean Gym Leaders to always use the same team of critters regardless of levels, possible evolutions, and types.

Cortondo is one of the main cities in Paldea, and it's found west of Mesagoza. The Gym Leader is called Katy, and her secondary job is that of managing a pastry shop. Katy is the first Gym Leader on the list due to her using the lowest-level pocket monsters at all times, with her team comprising the following Pokemon:

  • Nymble, level 14
  • Tarountula, level 14
  • Teddiursa, level 15, which becomes Bug-type when Katy uses her Tera Orb

Artazon Gym - Brassius, Grass-type Gym Leader

Like Cortondo, Artazon is the first city players run into when leaving Mesagoza, but this time it's located to the east of the capital. The Gym Leader of the Artazon Gym is Brassius, called "the Verdant Virtuoso," who specializes in Grass-type Pokemon. Brassius' team is of a slightly higher level than Katy's, and it includes the following Pokemon:

  • Petilil, level 16
  • Smoliv, level 16
  • Sudowoodo, level 17, which becomes Grass-type when Brassius uses his Tera Orb

Iono is one of the few Gym Leaders for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet revealed ahead of launch, and her main profession is streaming, which she constantly does, even for her Gym test and during the entire battle. Kofu the Cascarrafa gym leader in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Cascarrafa is the western equivalent of Levincia, and it features Pokemon with a similar level. However, Cascarrafa is smaller than Levincia, and it's a sort of oasis for travelers coming from the Asado Desert. The Gym Leader is a cook and fisherman called Kofu, who specializes in Water-type Pokemon. Kofu's team includes the following Pokemon:

  • Veluza, level 29
  • Wugtrio, level 29
  • Crabominable, level 30, which becomes Water-type when Kofu uses the power of Terastallization

Medali Gym - Larry, Normal-type Gym Leader

pokemon-scarlet-and-violet-medali-gym-guide-larry-challenge

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is an atypical set of games in the sense that they don't feature four completely different members of the Elite Four, and Medali Gym's Larry eventually joins the iconic group as a Flying-type trainer. During his time at the Medali Gym, Larry uses Normal-type Pokemon, including Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Dudunsparce, the new cross-gen evolution for Dunsparce. The Medali Gym Leader uses the following Pokemon:

  • Komala, level 35
  • Dudunsparce, level 35
  • Staraptor, level 36, which becomes a pure Normal-type when Larry uses his Tera Orb

Montenevera Gym - Ryme, Ghost-type Gym Leader

Another interesting town is that of Montenevera, which is located up north in Paldea. Here, the Gym Leader is Ryme, a singer who is not afraid to make opposing Pokemon faint with her lyrics and Ghost-type critters. This is also the only Gym encounter in Gen 9 to be a double battle. Ryme's team includes the following Pokemon:

  • Banette, level 41
  • Mimikyu, level 41
  • Houndstone, level 41
  • Toxtricity (Low Key form), level 42, which becomes Ghost-type when Ryme uses the power of Terastallization

Alfornada Gym - Tulip, Psychic-type Gym Leader

Despite it being the most isolated town of all in Paldea, Alfornada is not where the final Gym is located, at least going in a level-based order from lowest to highest. The Gym Leader here is Tulip, a fashionista who uses Psychic-type pocket monsters, among which is Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Espathra, a fast attacker that could share the same fate as Speed Boost Blaziken in competitive battles. Tulip's team includes the following Pokemon:

  • Farigiraf, level 44
  • Gardevoir, level 44
  • Espathra, level 44
  • Florges, level 45, which becomes Psychic-type when Tulip uses her Tera Orb

Glaseado Gym - Grusha, Ice-type Gym Leader

pokemon-scarlet-and-violet-gym-leaders-grusha-glaseado-gym

The city of Glaseado is actually quite close to Montenevera, but it features the highest-level Pokemon across all Gyms in Paldea. The Gym Leader is a former professional snowboarder called Grusha whom Pokemon Scarlet and Violet trailers revealed before any other. Grusha uses a team made of Ice-type Pokemon only, and his preferred choices for battle include:

  • Frosmoth, level 47
  • Beartic, level 47
  • Cetitan, level 47
  • Altaria, level 48, which becomes Ice-type when Grusha uses the power of Terastallization

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now on Nintendo Switch.
