[Update: Pokemon White 2 & Pokemon Black 2 have been officially announced!]

Even after all these years, Pokemon is still very much alive and kicking. The last big adventure games, Pokemon Black and White, are just under a year old here in North America but I think it’s safe to say that we’re ready for another installment. It looks like fans are going to get their wish too – because a big Pokemon announcement is set to hit this weekend.

Game Freak‘s Game Director Junichi Masuda has confirmed via his blog that he’ll be on the Japanese television show ‘Pokemon Smash!’ with some big news for Pokemon fans. Masuda stressed how “VERY” important this announcement will be, and encouraged everyone to tune in to watch the big reveal live. Unfortunately, ‘Pokemon Smash!’ only airs in Japan, so everyone here on the other side of the globe will have to wait a few excruciating minutes for the internet to spread the news.

Masuda’s blog post has been translated into English, but it’s still obviously very Japanese.

“On this coming Sunday, Februrary 26, 2012, from 7:30 A.M, I, Masuda, will be appearing on TV TOKYO’s Show, “Pokémon Smash”! Not only that. And there… I will be making a VERY important announcement, so be sure not to miss it!! Watch it live on TV! And, for those of you who can’t watch television on live, I will announce the same information right after the show via twitter! Everyone, I hope you all enjoy the show!! Ciao!”

The reveal is scheduled for 7:30am on a Sunday in Japan, which translates to 2:30pm PST Saturday afternoon over here.

This may finally be the day that The Pokemon Company and Nintendo announce the long-rumored Pokemon Gray, or they may just have news regarding another unwanted spin-off like Pokemon Rumble Blast. I’d put my money on a 3DS version of Pokemon Gray, but regardless of what the news turns out to be, you can expect full coverage on the announcement tomorrow, right here on Game Rant.

  1. Yesss. I can’t wait for this!

  2. Wow, can’t believe the guy on 4chan was right. He came out and said this Sunday they would announce a remake to Sapphire/Ruby. Just like Heartgold and SoulSilver.

    • I’d be more than down for a Ruby/Sapphire remake on the 3DS. Those games were great.

  3. I hope this is true…if it is true, then I’m sold. The reason I haven’t gotten White or Black yet is because it was almost time for a new Pokemon game. :X

  4. Another remake?? are you joking!?!? its about time nintendo stopped givin us old stuff topped off to look like new stuff..

    • Maybe they’ll finally have the pokeballs to announce a full 3D game on the Wii U. And not one of those junk battle games. An actual fully developed 3D game with cities and story and all the other stuff the handheld games have had.

      • You mean a game like Pokemon XD on the GameCube?

        • That would be awesome if they made another game with Shadow Pokemon!

          • yeah, XD was great. Ah, the memories…

      • “have the pokeballs” i see what you did there, and have you played pokemon xd? it wasn’t a junk battle game, yes it did have a battle mode, but the main gameplay was why i bought it, also, if they do announce a remake(its probably going to be gray) they are probably going to remake those games with it ( lets just hope the dont “remake” the berry glitch)

  5. I just hope that, if its either grey or R/S remake, they bring back the freaking VS. Seeker. Oh, VS. Seeker, how I miss you…

    • Agreed ^

  6. I think it will be an announcement of Pokemon Gray for the DS with a new forme of Kyurem. Kyurem is almost confirmed to have a new forme, as it has a placeholder for its new forme in the coding of B&W. As for Gray, I don’t think it would be 3DS because they would have to build the game from the ground up. It seems logical that they would put it on the DS with a few major and minor tweaks to the same game.

    • If it is Gray on the 3DS, then I wouldn’t expect a game built from the ground up. Just the same graphics and look with some added 3D, which Nintendo has done plenty of times (i.e. 3D Classics on the eShop). ;)

Still, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Nintendo decided to stick with the DS either. I’m excited to see what this announcement turns out to be. It’s about time we got a new adventure game. :D

      • i don’t think it will be for the 3DS, simply because it is so much more capable than the DS so Nintendo probably wouldn’t want to slap on 3D and release it just to have the 3DS brand name.

  7. If the make a new generation after they make Pokemon Grey instead of making a Pokemon XD like game on the 3ds with all or before Unova generations…im gonna do like my mother told me to do and grow up from Pokemon. Just saying a trash bag Pokemon and icecream WTF.

  8. My theories: If it’s 2D, Pokemon Gray or 3rd generation remake. If it’s 3D, Pokemon game that’s either Shadow Pokemon related or Pokemon Stadium related.

  9. Let’s think big guys! Doesn’t anyone want Pokemon Snap 2 on the 3DS? Or maybe even Pokemon Stadium 3 on the Wii U. I still play the minigames from Pokemon Stadium 2 every time I have friends over.

  10. Theyre releasing a pokemon black and white 2 :O A sequel!!!!!!
