After a series of failed theories, it seems like Pokemon GO players have finally figured out how to control Eevee's evolution into Flareon, Jolteon, or Vaporeon.

The Pokemon GO craze is still in full force a week after the game's launch and players are starting to unlock many of the game's secrets. Nobody has stumbled upon a legendary Pokemon quite yet, but there have been many theories about how to control the evolution of Eevee. The latest Pokemon GO rumor has been tested locally and seems to be working, though we can't offer 100% confirmation.

Originally, many gamers thought that Eevee's secondary attack predicted the evolution, but that proved to be incorrect. There's also a rumor about the evolution correlating to the color of the nearest gym, but that theory was also debunked. Instead, it seems the best way to take control of the otherwise random evolution has to do with an Easter egg (not the kind you hatch) referencing the original anime.

In the cartoon; Pyro, Sparky, and Rainer are known as the Eevee brothers and it seems Niantic has inserted a very fun reference to the trio in Pokemon GO. To control the evolution of Eevee, players just need to know which Eevee brother corresponds to each evolved form.

Here's how to get the evolution of your choice...

Rename Eevee

The first step is to open the menu and select the Eevee that you plan to evolve (probably the one with the highest CP). Click the edit button next to Eevee's name and change it to the appropriate nickname...

Sparky = Jolteon

Rainer = Vaporeon

Pyro = Flareon

Be sure to match the name character for character and capitalize the first letter.

Restart the Game

After renaming Eevee and saving, close the game all the way and then restart it. This is an optional step, but because the servers are still unstable, we recommend restarting to make sure that the name change stuck. A few Reddit users reported that the evolution trick didn't work, but they skipped this step and it's possible there was a server error.

Evolve

At this point, all that is left to do is click evolve. Game Rant tested this with each of the different evolutions and had a 100% success rate. Many users on Reddit have also reported that the trick is working for them. It's impossible to confirm the trick for sure at this point, but we will update if we have any failed attempts.

Good luck, trainers!
