Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 Sales Data in Japan

After years of being called a fad, the Pokemon franchise is still very much alive and well in the hearts of consumers. As if to further prove the point, the initial sales numbers are in for Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 in Japan. The pair of sequels sold over 1.6 million units in their first two days of availability, and managed to become the first game in Japan to sell a million units this year.

Enterbrain and Famitsu have just recently released the sales data for the first ever numbered Pokemon sequels. The impressive sales of Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 have placed the games at third in terms of Japan's fastest selling DS software, outsold only by the original Pokemon Black and White (1st) and Dragon Quest IX (2nd). While 1,618,621 units sold after just two days is far from a laughing matter, those numbers are still dwarfed by the sales of each games' predecessors; which were over one million units higher after the same amount of time.

As the week continues, even more copies of the new Pokemon titles will be sold, with a massive surplus of cash being placed squarely in the hands of The Pokemon Company and Nintendo. After the financial rough patch the Big N has been going through as of late, and the lukewarm reception they received during their E3 2012 press conference, this is some very welcomed news.

Pokemon Dream Radar was one of the biggest (only?) incentives to play either version on the Nintendo 3DS, so sales for the portable have likely seen a slight boost with the release of these blockbuster titles. After re-witnessing the immense popularity of the Pokemon franchise however, Nintendo may be wishing that they'd switched development over to their newer handheld to help ship more hardware.

Regardless, with the impending release Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 later this Fall, North American gamers have a lot to look forward to.
