PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Character Wishlist

Written by Game Rant's Riley Little and Anthony Mole.

After months of speculation, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is finally official, and it's coming to the PlayStation 3 later this year. With anticipation building for the newly revealed crossover-focused blockbuster, it's not surprising that speculation pertaining to which characters will make a playable appearance has begun to build up. There are many one-hit wonders and franchises that have had a prominent role in Sony's past, and with third-party characters officially making an appearance, there's no telling who will make the final cut.

The next reveal isn't scheduled to happen for another two weeks or so, according to the official PlayStation All-Stars site, so we've taken the liberty of crafting a list of 25 characters that need to be in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. With a huge list of potentials to choose from, fellow writer Anthony Molé and I have managed to sift through the PlayStation archives and pick what we believe are the 25 best candidates.

PlayStation Allstars Battle Royale Roster

Before there was Crash Bandicoot, there was Polygon Man. Polygon Man was the original PlayStation mascot, though his presence was short lived. He never actually starred in a game, and he's just a head made out of polygons. But he's a part of history, and he deserves a spot.

Polygon Man's fighting style would focus on doing whatever heads do. So, spit on enemies? Superbot would have to get creative with this one.

The Heavenly Sword protagonist is a no-brainer for Sony's upcoming brawler. Nariko already displayed her skills in the early PS3 title, which not only demonstrated of the graphical prowess of Sony's system, but gave developer Ninja Theory the reputation of a great hack and slash developer.

Nariko would use her Heavenly Sword in combat, allowing for a variety of techniques, giving the sword's malleability as a weapon. She's probably one of the few characters that could go toe-to-toe with Kratos.

While the PSOne days brought plenty of great JRPGs to the mainstream, it was also a golden age for platformers. In addition to classics like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, the PSOne was also home to Gex, the Gecko.

Gex's moves would include use of his tail and tongue to strike enemies from a distance. He'd sort of be like Yoshi in Super Smash Bros., except he won't eat enemies and poop them out. And hopefully he won't lose every battle he fights in.

Kevin Butler is one of the most recognizable of Sony's mascots. The commercials he's stared in are synonymous with PlayStation Brand, and have even lead to a few copy cats. The man made an epic appearence at E3 two years ago with a motivational gamer-focused speech and if he's not in All-Stars Battle Royale, then Sony's made the biggest mistake of all time.

Butler would use regular kicks and punches for his attacks, as well as have the ability to whip enemies with his tie. For long range attacks, he would throw photos of SCEA president Jack Tretton at enemies.

Continuing on the list of great PSOne titles is Tomba! - a game many PlayStation owners should be familiar with. The sidescroller and its sequel are considered to be classics, even if developer Whoopee Camp went out of business shortly after Tomba! 2's release. Main character Tomba is easily recognizable - who could ignore that pink hair!

Tomba's attacks could focus around the ability to grab and throw enemies, making him one character you'd want to fight from long range.

As the main character of Sony’s Medievil franchise, Sir Daniel Fortesque, would be a welcome addition to Sony’s new fighter. The man — err… skeleton — is not only a master swordsman, but he also has a comedic charm to boot. The two MediEvil games are PS1 classics, despite the gameplay beginning to show its age in 2012.

Sir Dan’s fighting style could focus on swordplay, as well as his ability to take off his arm and throw it at enemies. Dan also has access to a few magical spells, including a devastating lightning attack.

As the star of the upcoming Vita action title, Gravity Rush, Kat’s ability to defy gravity should solidify her as a necessary character for All-Stars. Gravity Rush is slated to be a must-own Vita title, and one that will certainly help out Sony’s handheld in its early days. Kat’s fighting style could focus around her anti-gravity abilities, giving her the power to fly around the environment at a nimble pace, much like Sly Cooper — another All-Stars character.

Emmett’s the star of Lightbox Interactive’s recently released Starhawk — a spiritual successor to Warhawk. Warhawk was an important game for the PS3, helping push online play when the PSN was still in its infancy. Unfortunately, the lack of a single-player campaign didn't provide many recognizable characters. Emmett’s the exact opposite of that, as his glowing blue hand — infused with Rift energy — separates him from the other inhabitants of White Sands.

Emmett is a skilled sharpshooter, so most of his moves could revolve around guns and his special could allow for him to build structures (like a gun turret). This would make him much more efficient at long range, but to balance this out, SuperBot could make him weaker than the melee-centric characters.

Lammy – If Parappa the Rappa is coming to All-Stars Battle Royale, then Lammy from UmJammer Lammy also needs to make an appearance. UnJammer Lammy is essentially a spiritual sequel to Parrappa that brought many improvements to the first game. What better way for PS1 one fans to bask in nostalgia than to have her fight Parappa? Lammy is the guitarist in her band MilkCan, so the majority of her moves would have to focus on her guitar. She could use the instrument as a melee weapon or use it to produce a short-range musical attack.

Dart – The Legend of Dragoon was Sony’s attempt at captializing on the JRPG craze during the PS1 days, and boy does the title have a passionate fanbase. For the longest time PlayStation fans have clamoured for a sequel. Even if Sony doesn’t have one planned, they can do the next best thing, add main character Dart to All-Stars’ roster. It’s already confirmed that Kratos will be in All-Stars Battle Royale, but what would the game be without a little brotherly love? Deimos — Kratos' half-brother — first made his appearance in the PSP title Ghost of Sparta. Much like his brother, Deimos is an undeniable badass, capable of some of truly gut-wrenching attacks.

Developer Ready at Dawn’s Ghost of Sparta gave PSP owners something to play during the system's dry spells, making both it and Chains of Olympus two of the most important titles on Sony’s handheld. Deimos would feature a move set similar to that of Kratos, which would offer melee and magic abilities, though they would differ in terms of animations.

The Yakuza franchise isn't exactly the biggest video game brand name in North America, but in Japan it's a best seller for Sega. While the franchise isn't owned by Sony, it has always been a PlayStation exclusive, one that brought a debatably deep — and at times confusing — story with great characters and solid gameplay.

The game's main star, Kazuma Kiryu, is already an experienced fighter, so it's not as if SuperBot would need to do a lot of work figuring out fighting moves. Kazuma could do basic kicks and punches, put also some nasty finishers, such as smacking heads against walls or jumping on an enemy’s face. Though it might need to be toned down from what Yakuza fans are used too.

Thatgamecompany became a sensation this generation with games like flOw and Flower proving the PlayStation Network had what it took to compete with Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade titles. Their third PSN release, Journey, is easily one of the best titles on Sony’s network, earning universal critical appraise. The Journeyer is a much more tangible character than the wind or microorganisms of Thatgamecompany’s last two games, making him/her/it a perfect fit.

Considering the Jounreyer doesn't actually have hands, the best way for it to fight would be with its scarf. Players could use it like a whip, or perhaps wrap it around an enemy and then unravel the scarf, sending them spinning.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

Just as Thatgamecompany is to the PS3, Team Ico is to the PS2. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are considered two PS2 classics, and what better way to showcase this than having Ico and Yorda (the main two main characters in Ico) appear in All-Stars Battle Royale. We just have to wonder, will they be holding hands the entire time? It seems pretty difficult to fight when doing that.

Despite releases on numerous consoles, the Metal Gear Solid series is synonymous with the PlayStation Brand. Solid Snake is an easily identifiable character, and Metal Gear Solid was a game that helped push the PS1 and gaming in new directions. Snake is a major part of the platform’s history, making him an easy choice for Sony’s new brawler.

Snake has appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, so we’d definitely need to see a new move set if he makes an appearance in All-Stars.

Those who aren't aware of who Spike is, he's the main protagonist from the original Ape Escape that made its debut back on the original PlayStation in 1999. Ape Escape was the first game to use the DualShock controller — the same design that's still used today — making the game's overall impact substantial on the brand.

Spike has all kinds of weapons at his disposal, including a Stun Club, a hula-hoop that makes him run extremely fast, a slingshot, and his signature Time Net; all of which would come together to create a great move set. There are few characters that deserve a spot on the Battle Royale roster as much as much as Spike.

Originally created by Insomniac Games as a launch title for the PlayStation 3, Resistance has gone on to become one of the most prominent exclusives for the system. Some may argue that Nathan Hale should represent the franchise in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, but it's the Chimera Hybrid that has remained a constant face throughout every single game in the series.

The chimera have a plethora of  futuristic armaments at their disposal, and that would obviously play a huge role in the Hybrid's arsenal. The character would likely be the most proficient in close to mid-range combat, and its special attack could allow it to call in support from the 300ft tall Chimera Leviathan.

It's been a long time since gamers were treated to a PlayStation-exclusive Spyro game, but there is still a fan base that would love to see the original purple dragon return to form. Ownership of the character has since fallen into the hands of Activision, but since Spyro was once the face of the original PlayStation his appearance in Battle Royale is a necessity.

Spyro the Dragon's move set would include the ability to breathe fire, charge horns-first at his opposition, and glide across any arena — all of which are trademark abilities from the PS1 classic. Preferably, Spyro will appear in his original form (not the horrifyingly revamped Skylanders version), otherwise it would be doing gamers a disservice. Hopefully this deal works out between the two parties, because it's a character that people would love to see return to form at least one more time.

This infamous duo may have been missing in action since the PlayStation 2 era (excluding the more recent Jak and Daxter Collection), but the Naughty Dog-developed series still has a strong fan base. Adding Jak and Daxter to the All-Stars roster doesn't seem like that much of a stretch, and they should be considered shoo-ins given their popularity and notoriety among PlayStation owners. It also doesn't hurt their chances considering the Sandover Village level in the game is already based on their universe.

When it comes to combat potential, the pair have an unhealthy amount of weapons at their disposal. What would their finishing move be? Well, there's no better way to throttle your enemies than transforming the soul patch-donning protagonist into Dark Jak and unleashing several cans of whoop ass.

The main hero/villain from the InFamous series has been enjoying a solid string of success as of late. Cole MacGrath was recently spotted as a special guest character in the PS3/Vita versions of Street Fighter X Tekken, so there's no question that he knows his way around a 2D brawler. His inevitable inclusion will also allow fans of the developer Sucker Punch to see whether or not Cole can hold his own against the already confirmed Sly Cooper.

MacGrath is gifted with the power to control electricity, and his combat prowess is matched only by his parkour skills. This character's move set would feature up close and personal melee attacks, coupled with a few mid-range lightning bolts. In terms of finishers, summoning the Ionic Vortex (giant electrical tornado) from InFamous 2 seems like a solid choice.

Ratchet and his trusty robotic sidekick Clank are two of the most recognizable characters on a Sony game console. Created by Insomniac Games, the same developer behind the Resistance franchise, Ratchet and Clank was the go-to series after the company sold their rights to Spyro the Dragon, and it has gone on to become quite successful.

The series is known for its over-the-top weapons, and it's safe to assume that All-Stars will take full advantage of the bizarre armaments when the pair of heroes make the final cut. With gravity boots, a Morph-O-Ray, a wrench, and his mechanical ally Clank, Ratchet's odds of bringing the pain to those unfortunate enough to meet him in battle are more than good.

Final Fantasy 7 is an intricate part of PlayStation's history, and what better way to reflect on that prestigious past then to insert the game's main character, Cloud, into the fray. FF7 still stands as one of the, if not the, most popular games in the entire Final Fantasy franchise. Demands for a remake have been building up ever since a tech demo showcasing an HD version of the game was used to show off the graphical capabilities of the PS3.

The Buster Sword that Cloud wields can pack a mean punch for anyone unfortunate enough to get in its way, but it would limit the character to close-quarters combat and likely make him slower than some of the other All-Stars. Regardless, SuperBot shouldn't have a problem implementing a recognizable arsenal of moves that do the classic hero justice.

Remember the original PlayStation? If so, then Crash Bandicoot is a series that should prominently come to mind as one of the best games offered on the system during its lifespan. The rights to Crash have since been sold to Activision, and the property has fallen by the wayside. Anyone who played the original games from Naughty Dog will know how essential this character's appearance is to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale — besides, there's no one we'd rather have crash the party.

Crash is known for getting right into the action with spin attacks and belly flops, both of which translate nicely to a melee-focused character. There are few characters that deserve a spot on the roster more than Crash Bandicoot, and we hope that Sony recognizes this.

The main man from Uncharted will undoubtedly make a playable appearance in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale; that much is nearly certain. Nathan Drake is an adventurer on par with the likes of a pre-Crystal Skull Indiana Jones, and his popularity will definitely score him a spot on the final roster of this fighting game.

With a variety of military-grade weapons in his inventory and his ability to literally climb almost anything, Drake brings with him the know-how to kick the crap out of would-be gods, clowns, and rappers. Naughty Dog is responsible for the creation of three of the characters on this list, and we'll be heart-broken if even a single one is left out.

The stuffing-filled protagonist of the LittleBigPlanet series is our number one must-have character in this list — although him and Nathan Drake are really interchangeable. The reason why Sackboy scored the coveted number one spot is because of the uniqueness the character would bring to a game of this type.

With his adorable monicker, he doesn't look like he's capable of much in terms of violence... but anyone who's played LittleBigPlanet knows just how ferocious this character can be. The creature can often be found creating all kinds of weapons of mass destruction, and its paintball gun and grappling hook make it a force to be reckoned with. There are few characters that would be able to beat the stuffing out of Sackboy, although we'd love to see them give it a try.
