‘Plants vs Zombies’ Featured in ‘World of Warcraft: Cataclysm’

Plants vs Zombies is one of the most successful titles PopCap Games has ever released. Here at Game Rant, we enjoyed both the iPhone and Xbox 360 versions of the game. Given the number of hardcore gamers who have embraced the game’s wonderful, plants-soiling action, it’s no surprise that Blizzard would have an ode to Plants vs Zombies in World of Warcraft.

The quest featured in World of Warcraft is a very faithful recreation of Plants vs Zombies’ gameplay, with new plants being unlocked, sunlight raining down to be gathered, and more and more challenging “zombies” (ghouls, whatever) to be killed. You can see the game for yourself in the video below, but be warned: if you already drained a lot of time into Plants vs Zombies, you should know that this is one quest where the bonus loot might include a few extra days off work, spent locked in your room.

You might be wondering how PopCap would respond to such an accurate replication of their game by another developer – in the past, many companies might have responded with a legal notice. But according to the video above, Blizzard has a good relationship with PopCap, having had some interaction with them in the past. The video’s narrator goes so far as to say that PopCap might have actually assisted with, or at least offered some programming advice on, the production of Cataclysm’s Plants vs Zombies quest. We can only hope the two companies have a good understanding, as this is one quest that’s certainly different than your usual dungeon trawl.

So, “Peaceblooms vs Ghouls,” as we will call it, certainly has quite a bit of gameplay to it. If the 25 minute video didn’t tip you off, let us spell it out for you: there are several different levels, a fairly in-depth system of plants and enemies, and a pretty large amount of experience for you to earn if you go through the levels.

The video has been getting mixed reviews, and I’m pretty curious to see how the game will fair when it is finally offered to the general World of Warcraft crowd. There are a few who have proclaimed that this is worse than Farmville. Others were excited to get their seed-planting action on (in the most plant-onic definition of the phrase. Okay, I’ll stop with the plant jokes now), but only time will tell.

What do you think of this Cataclysm Quest, Ranters? Do you think Blizzard did a good job replicating Plants vs Zombies, or are you not a fan? Are you excited to play the quest in WoW? Post your thoughts below!

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm may be arriving  November 2, 2010.
