Will Kojima Finally Confirm ‘Phantom Pain’ is ‘Metal Gear Solid 5′?

Phantom Pain Interview

Who is Joakim Mogren? Is Phantom Pain a real game? Is Moby Dick Studio a real game developer? These are just a few of the questions we hope to have answered by this time tomorrow night.

More importantly, fans want to know if Metal Gear Solid 5, or Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, are in any way tied to The Phantom Pain. The mysterious game’s trailer featured some pretty compelling footage that indicated it was, but there have been no outright confirmations.

However, all that should change, as Geoff Keighley plans to sit down with Joakim Mogren for an exclusive interview tonight. Additionally, Keighley hopes to learn more about Phantom Pain, the game that first caught our eye back at the Spike VGAs.

According to Keighley, he has never before met Mogren, but he was shown some new images from the game. We have no idea what those images were though.

Frankly, we hope that Kojima, if he is indeed Joakim Mogren, abandons the charade and just admits that Phantom Pain is Metal Gear Solid 5. Moreover, if Geoff Keighley has been in on it from the beginning, well, that probably won’t change gamers’ perception of him anyway.

It will be odd, however, to have two high profile Metal Gear Solid games in development. That said, if Metal Gear Solid 5 were a next-gen title, that might be another major selling point for Sony’s PS4.

Or maybe we’re all reading too much into it — maybe Joakim Mogren is the CEO of Moby Dick Studio, and Phantom Pain is their first game. Actually, there’s no one that can be true.

Why would GameTrailers TV — a show known for breaking big news in the gaming world and getting all the high profile talent on for interviews — set up an interview with someone we’ve never even seen before. Phantom Pain has to be Metal Gear in some way, shape, or form. We’ll make sure to provide an update after the GameTrailers TV episode airs on Thursday.

Do you think that Mogren/Kojima will blow the lid on the next Metal Gear Solid? Or will he just try to confuse us more?

  1. Maybe these shenanigans are cute in Japan. They’re tiresome and pointless here.

    • Meh. I disagree. I’m amused.

  2. It’s way obvious this is a Metal Gear game. They’re not fooling me. Although I did like the way they tried to generate hype. Very clever.

  3. Kojima rearranged the letters of own name to come up with joakim. Very obvious , what ever these games are going to be about I will enjoy them anyways , I don’t really care about the mystery mind games, once they are released ill buy, play , enjoy then move on to the next game I feel like playing

  4. or Durango if GZ is multiplat i do not see why V would not be Multiplat games often mean more $$$$ for big franchises

  5. Mgs5

  6. I hope it’s not. They announced Ground Zeros and that’s good enough for now. Unless MGS5 will be for PS4 of course.

  7. It is not an original IP. My proof being that the company Moby Dick studios is not listed as attending, presenting or exhibiting at GDC 2013 as presented in the video. Also no one by the name Joakim Mogren is speaking or presenting. Konami is listed as attending. Kojima is listed as presenting. Point made
