Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter predicts that both the Nintendo NX and PlayStation Neo consoles will miss their currently expected launch dates.

With Nintendo set to launch its next major home console, the Nintendo NX, in 2017, many expected to see the device at E3. However, Nintendo announced before the event that the Nintendo NX wouldn't be shown at E3 2016, and according to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, known for his many predictions about the video game industry, this absence could indicate that the console will not meet its planned release date.

Pachter believes that if the NX was going to be ready by March 2017, that Nintendo would have shown it already. If the Big N decides to unveil the console by August or September, then Pachter thinks that there is still a chance for it to be available in March 2017 as Nintendo has previously announced. A more realistic release date for the NX, if Pachter's prediction is accurate, is summer of 2017.

Besides the Nintendo NX, Pachter also spoke about a potential release date for Sony's upgraded PS4, currently known by its code name, PlayStation Neo. Contrary to rumors that the PlayStation Neo will launch this year, Pachter believes that it will probably arrive anywhere from March 2017 to summer 2017, which would put it in the same launch window as the NX.

Pachter's rationale for the PlayStation Neo not releasing this year is the same as his reasoning for why the NX won't meet its release date. Since the PlayStation Neo wasn't at E3, this leads Pachter to believe that the console simply isn't ready to be shown to the public yet, and probably won't be ready for sale in time for this year's holiday season.

If Pachter's predictions are true, this would mean that 2017 could see Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all launch new consoles. The Big N may have hoped to introduce the NX to the market without having to worry about competing with new hardware from its competitors as well, but if Pachter is correct and the Neo comes out next year, it looks as though those plans have been foiled.

If Project Scorpio, PlayStation Neo, and the Nintendo NX all launch next year as Pachter has predicted, 2017 could be huge for the gaming industry. All three devices have potential to mean big changes to the current cycle of console generations, and it will be interesting to see which device is the most popular with consumers. In the meantime, even if the consoles won't be available to purchase by the end of the year, hopefully fans will at least get to see them within the next few months.

Nintendo NX is currently scheduled to launch in March of 2017.
