Rockstar Games announced today that Max Payne will be launching on mobile devices this fall. The original title that brought bullet-time into gaming will be getting the full HD treatment and will also have connectivity to the Rockstar Social Club. The only major detail Rockstar didn’t mention was which specific mobile devices the game will be launching on.

While not revealing platform details, Rockstar did mention that the mobile version of Max Payne will get a graphical update with high-resolution textures, “taking full advantage of the latest mobile technologies, including incredibly customizable controls.” This hints that iOS and Android will get the HD remaster of Max Payne since these devices lack the twin-sticks of a controller.

Max Payne was one of the most influential games of the last generation, appearing on every major console, including the Game Boy Advance. The title’s gripping narrative was delivered by comic book styled panels with voice overs – a feature that will be returning in Max Payne 3. The other major selling point of Max Payne was of course, it’s bullet-time mechanic which remains one of the best implementations of the Matrix-inspired system to this day.

The release of Max Payne on mobile devices may also make way for Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne to get HD treatment. It makes one wonder if Rockstar is planning to make a Max Payne HD collection sometime down the road - this does seem to be the trend these days. Perhaps we'll see a special collector's edition with the release of Max Payne 3 early next year. Packing in HD versions of the first two titles in the series will be a nice incentive for fans and newcomers alike to purchase MP3, especially since the game may need to break 4 million units sold to make a profit.

Max Payne will hit mobile devices this fall with no specific release date and Max Payne 3 is aiming for a March 2012 release date for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
