Obsidian Star Wars Pitch

After Disney announced they were shuttering developer LucasArts and sticking to strictly licensing deals, the general consensus was that the Star Wars franchise was more up for grabs than ever. Any developer that could make a great pitch had a very realistic shot of making a Star Wars game.

While we've yet to hear too much about potential licensing deals, and whether or not Star Wars 1313 might find new life elsewhere, one developer is throwing its name into the pile. Obsidian Entertainment, best known for their work on Knights of the Old Republic 2, says they would love to pitch a Star Wars game to Disney.

In an email to Eurogamer, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart started off by expressing his sadness over the closure of LucasArts. Although the developer had been struggling to find hits within the Star Wars universe as of late, they at one time were strong supporters of some high profile properties, among them the Knights of the Old Republic franchise.

Urquhart continued saying that he would love to work within the Star Wars universe again. In fact, Obsidian had pitched a project to LucasArts in February, and LucasArts apparently loved it.

The game was reportedly set between Episodes 3 and 4, and would focus on the fall of the Republic and the extermination of the Jedi. It would also follow Obi Wan Kenobi, as he ensures Luke stays safe.

Back in February, Rock Paper Shotgun asked Urquhart if the Disney/LucasFilm acquisition would impact the pitch, to which he replied:

“It’s something we’re still hoping for, even with the Disney/Lucas stuff going on. It changes things a lot, but you know, we’re gonna push on it. I would say it’s within the top three pitches we’ve ever come up with. We really worked on it hard and distilled it down to these eight or ten pages that really sold the story and characters. Then we sold it off to LucasArts and got a call back later that day. They were like, ‘This seems really cool. We want to talk to you guys, like, tomorrow about it.’”

So even though there may not be a LucasArts, that doesn't mean Obsidian's pitch can't live on as a licensing deal. Despite claims that BioWare's MMO The Old Republic would encompass KOTOR 3-9, most fans would like to see proper RPGs under that franchise umbrella. This project from Obsidian could very easily be that type of game.

The closure of LucasArts is still very fresh on gamers' minds, though, so we wouldn't expect licensing announcements so soon. But rest assured Disney is likely taking meetings as we speak.

Would you like to see Obsidian develop a Star Wars game? How about another Knights of the Old Republic?
