NPD: PS4 Outsells Xbox One in February, But XB1 Earns More Total Revenue

PS4 Xbox One E3 2013

February console sales numbers are in and once again the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One. Sony’s console hit big numbers this past month, while its competitor didn’t fall quite that far behind – moving about 90% of what the PS4 did.

Unfortunately, last month’s NPD numbers do not include an official tally for the PS4. We do know that the Xbox One sold about 258,000 units, though, so its fair to assume Sony’s console sales were somewhere in the 286,000 range.

Also, since the disparity between PS4 and Xbox One was so close, Microsoft‘s next-gen console actually out earned Sony‘s. An extra $100 per unit makes a difference when things are so close.

All told, hardware sales were up 42 percent from last year, while software sales were down about 9 percent. That should be of little consequence to Microsoft, though, as each Xbox One console sold carries an attach rate of about 2.75 games per console. And that number will likely jump up this month with Titanfall hitting.

Clearly both Sony and Microsoft have plenty to be happy about, as both their consoles are still selling very well in North America. And, with both consoles slated to get more and more support in high profile exclusives and multiplatform titles in the upcoming months, things should get even better.

Call of Duty Ghosts Review

On the software side, Call of Duty: Ghosts is still going strong, taking the top yet again. The LEGO Movie Videogame came in second, proving that the LEGO brand is still very strong. It also doesn’t hurt when the movie your game is based on is the highest grossing movie of the year either.

Check out the full top 10 below:

  1. Call Of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS3, XBO, PS4, NWU, PC)**
  2. The LEGO Movie Videogame (360, PS3, 3DS, NWU, XBO, PS4, PSV)
  3. NBA 2K14 (360, PS4, PS3, XBO, PC)**
  4. Thief (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  5. Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)**
  6. Battlefield 4 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3, PC)
  7. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (360, PS4, PS3, XBO, NWU, PC)**
  8. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, 360)
  9. Minecraft (360)
  10. Bravely Default (3DS)

Other titles of note include Thief, which came in at number 4; Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13, which only managed an 8th place debut; and Bravely Default, which rounded out the top 10 with a reported 200,000 units. Since publisher Square Enix has not reported actual sales numbers for Thief we don’t know whether a fourth place debut is good or bad news, but the title did receive mostly negative reviews from critics. It’s also worth mentioning that developer Eidos Montreal recently let 27 staff members go, but they claimed that was merely a natural part of the development cycle.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze sold about 130,000 units in its first eight days of release, making it the fourth best selling SKU (individual platform release) for the month. On a similar note, the Wii U saw a 25% increase in sales in February.

Overall, February was a strong month for console and software sales, even if software was down a bit from last year. Luckily, March has plenty of high profile releases for gamers to be excited about, many of which should help keep PS4 and Xbox One sales rolling.

Did you buy a PS4 or Xbox One last month? Did you pick up any of the top 10 best selling games?

Given that you’ve already established that the PS4 and Xbone are being sold at either a loss or break-even price, saying Microsoft earned more money is stretching things quite a bit.

      • CoDroStyle

Exactly my thoughts. I haven’t even played this COD.
I’m so sick of the IP I didn’t even bother buying it yet it’s still #1

Glad to see Bravely Default made the top 10. That should be good news considering it is only out for the 3DS and not multiple platforms. It’s a wonderful game. Hopefully it ends up outperforming FF13-3 and sends a strong message to Squeenix about what happens when you repeatedly release garbage.

On the other hand, CoD & GTA rehashes are still ruling the roost. I guess it depends on what type of garbage you keep releasing. Squeenix will probably release a multiplayer FPS with the characters from FF13 next.

How is GTA a re-hash? I’m not defending the game at all. But it plays quite differently from previous GTAs.
