A higher tier of Nintendo Switch Online was revealed earlier this month at the latest Nintendo Direct. While the event was mainly focused on Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the upcoming Happy Home Paradise DLC, Nintendo also took the opportunity to announce the long awaited price point for the NSO Expansion Pack.

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is priced at $49.99 for 12 months, but it is also being offered as a family plan for $79.99. In addition to all of the features included in the basic NSO service, it comes bundled with some popular Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis titles. The Happy Home Paradise DLC for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sells for $24.99, is also included as a part of this subscription. The reaction to the announcement of this Expansion Pack was understandably negative, and it looks like fan backlash has crossed a new milestone.

The overview trailer of the Expansion Pack for Nintendo Switch Online was flooded with dislikes when it was first released, and that number now stands at a staggering 100k. Judging by the comments, fans don’t think that the service is worth the cost. It has handedly beaten the overview trailer for Nintendo Switch Online from April 2021, which is sitting at 70k dislikes. Although, that video was flooded with so many dislikes when it was first released, Nintendo had removed it from their YouTube channel and re-uploaded it later.

The basic version of Nintendo Switch Online is not that expensive at $19.99 for a year, and fans are perhaps more open to subscribing due to the relatively low asking price. However, the Expansion Pack tier pales in comparison to PlayStation Plus, which is more expensive but offers a much better value proposition. Xbox Games Pass is widely considered as the best subscription service currently available, but it costs a lot more per a one year subscription and should not be compared to NSO or PS Plus.

There is little historical evidence to support any theories of Nintendo altering its plans due to fan backlash. Nintendo Switch Online had 26 million subscribers as of September 2020 and current members do get a discount if they decide to upgrade to the Expansion Pack.

However, given that even Nintendo 64 games are having issues, fans may want to wait for the release of the Happy Home Paradise DLC before making a decision. If the Expansion Pack subscription numbers do not meet the internal target, Nintendo may consider adding other games and bonuses in order to make the service more appealing.
