After many fans were curious as to what the next update to Nintendo Switch Online would be, speculating potential Nintendo 64 games and possibly Game Boy games, the latest Nintendo Direct has announced new details. Not only are Nintendo 64 titles coming to the subscription just in time for the console's 25th anniversary, but to the surprise of many fans, so are SEGA Genesis games.

Back in the '90s, as Nintendo and SEGA went head to head in the console market, SEGA was known for coining the phrase "Genesis does what Nintendon't," among other aggressive marketing campaigns against its biggest competitor at the time. Now, 30 years later, the Genesis has found new life with Nintendo Switch Online thanks to this collaboration.

Announced in the Nintendo Direct shared on September 23, SEGA Genesis titles will be playable on the best-selling hybrid console as part of Nintendo Switch Online's newest payment plan. It's combined with the Nintendo 64 titles in the "Expansion Pack" plan, fittingly named after an age-old N64 perhipheral. The price of the plan has yet to be revealed, only said to be discussed at a later date.

So far, 14 games have been announced to be playable when the collection arrives in late October, such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Ecco the Dolphin, and Streets of Rage. Nintendo is pulling out all the stops for the collection it's offering, down to selling special wireless Genesis controllers to be used with the Nintendo Switch. The unique throwback controller can be bought exclusively by any NSO member, just like the service's last release of NES and SNES-themed controllers.

It's certainly a team-up that is sure to surprise old-school fans everywhere, considering SEGA and Nintendo's competitive history. Even Sonic himself was created to compete against Mario in sales, and now even the console he was made for has a home with Nintendo after everything that happened between the two companies in the past.

The only trouble the collaboration faces is if fans will think the collection is worth the added price tag, especially since SEGA has already made efforts to make their older games widely available, like the SEGA Forever campaign. The Genesis titles as a result may ride more on the Nintendo 64 collection's coattails rather than be worth the price on its own to prospective buyers. For now, fans looking forward to both collections will need to wait for the reveal of Nintendo Switch Online's Expansion Pack's price in the next few weeks before deciding.
