NES Nintendo 3DS XL Design

Nintendo announced three new Nintendo 3DS XL designs at the GameStop EXPO in Anaheim, California today that will inevitably cause current 3DS XL owners to look at their systems in disgust. Not only is the company bringing something for Super Smash Bros. fans, but also those eager to play Persona Q. And as if that wasn't enough, there's also a new 3DS XL sporting a the classic NES design, because Nintendo knows how to reignite old loves.

The Super Smash Bros. 3DS design will come in two variants - Red and Blue - with both covers featuring a number of recognizable characters from the game's roster, including Link, Little Mac and Pikachu. Due out on September 19th to prepare for Super Smash Bros. 3DS' October 3rd launch, the new handheld will retail for $199.99. Sadly, a copy of the game is not included.

The GameStop exclusive Persona Q 3DS XL (see below) features the new, unique art style of Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, complete with a cover that resembles the tome used to enter the game's Velvet Room. Like the aforementioned Smash Bros. 3DS XL, this will also retail for $199.99. However, a specific release date was not given.

The most surprising of the three designs and easily our favorite is the NES styled 3DS (see above image). Yet another GameStop exclusive, this hardware model releases on October 10 for $199.99. The handheld itself is styled after the classic NES controller, while the box it comes in looks like an NES system. This, much more than the former two designs, will probably be the most sought after model. That isn't to say the other two will be neglected, because everyone likes new color variations. Scott Moffitt, executive vice president of Nintendo of America’s Sales & Marketing:

"More than 12 million systems in the Nintendo 3DS family have been sold in the U.S. alone. These new models give shoppers even more choices during the holiday shopping season. Based on past experience, these special editions likely won’t stay on shelves for very long."

Frustratingly enough, the timing of these new 3DS XL designs comes not too long after Nintendo announced the New Nintendo 3DS, which has yet to get any special designs of its own. Some may pass up on buying yet another 3DS XL when a newer model is right around the corner. As or right now, the New Nintendo 3DS system only has a Japan launch date of October 11; North America and Europe may have to wait until 2015.

Which of the three 3DS XL designs are you most hoping to get? Or is this a "I want them all!" situation?

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS releases on October 3, 2014. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth releases on November 25, 2014.
