Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition Leaked Via Rating

Let's be honest:a new Mortal Kombat game was only a matter of time. After the most recent reboot/return to roots turned out to be not just one of the best fighting games in recent memory, but the most successful MK entry ever, it went without saying that developer NetherRealm was going to make the most out of its successful experiment.

Despite that, the team has remained silent. But at San Diego Comic-Con 2013, a producer on the ongoing Mortal Kombat web series confirmed that part of the planning for the upcoming feature film adaptation hinged on releasing alongside a new video game - already being developed by NetherRealm.

Again, the leak is less than shocking, especially considering just how far away the Mortal Kombat movie reboot is from release. Series creator Ed Boon wouldn't provide any details on the future of the MK game series when we asked at the same event (beyond claiming that fans have reason to be "very excited" for what's to come), since the event was mainly to promote season two of the Mortal Kombat Legacy series, and offer a tease of what lay in store for director Kevin Tancharoen's feature film.

But in an interview with GamerHub.tv regarding the movie reboot, Legacy producer Lance Sloane let confirmation slip:

"Well, we've been in greenlight committee for a while at the studio and we've got a great script, and we've got a great director with Kevin Tancharoen who is on board. It's just figuring out the business side of it, and when we would do it, and when we would launch it, and how do we sync up with the launch of the game that they're working on now. It's not 100% yet, but we're getting closer every day."

It's unfortunate that Sloane will be credited with 'leaking' the fact that NetherRealm is already developing a follow-up to Mortal Kombat, since... the studio has to be doing something; with Injustice: Gods Among Us shipped and sold, what else could they be up to?

For his part, Boon hasn't kept quiet concerning his hopes for the next entry in the series: a continuation of the 2D fighting style, and innovation only possible on next-gen consoles. Since the movie that the game is intended to launch beside is still without a production start date or release year, a next-gen release is a no-brainer, but it is still early days for development.

Nevertheless, that's good news for fans of the series who are hoping to see their old favorites once again (not injected into the DC Comics universe, that is). Hopefully Sloane's slip-up will urge the studio to make an official comment, but considering we're still years away from release, they may have little else to offer.

What are your hopes for the next Mortal Kombat? Does the plan to release it alongside the movie have you suspicious - given the fate of movie tie-ins - or is this one franchise that can keep movie fans and gamers happy? Sound off in the comments.
