God of War Roundup Ascension Santa Monica Studio

From the Mortal Kombat X announcement trailer to confirmation of Forza Horizon 2 and Homefront: The Revolution, the week prior to E3 is already turning out to be full of big announcements, continuing the trend of early announcements which also included Far Cry 4, Halo 5: Guardians, Battlefield Hardline, etc.. With so many of the bombs expected to drop next week at E3 arriving early, we're beginning to wonder just how much surprising news can be left for the showroom floor. Luckily, according to a tweet made by Sony Santa Monica this morning, there's at least one big reveal still to come next week from the Sony camp.

Over a year has passed since rumors of a God of War 4 announcement to compliment the PS4 release were circulating and (aside from these awesome blacksmith-crafted blades of chaos) we haven't heard much from the franchise since the new Sony console launched. Santa Monica Studios left a fairly straightforward natural disaster-inspired hint on its Twitter account this morning, suggesting that E3 may bring some news about Kratos' next epic journey...

Sony Santa Monica has been bringing Kratos to life since the PS2 era, so the studio is definitely a credible source on all things God of War. The tease points towards the next installment in the God of War franchise, which will likely be a PS4 exclusive. GoW: Ascension hit the PS3 in March 2013 and was met with mostly positive reviews from critics.

For gamers worried that the new Sony console isn't delivering enough exclusive titles to make the console stand out from the competition, a new installment in the established hack-and-slash action franchise would likely go a long way. When you put a new God of War title next to Uncharted 4 and The Order: 1886, the PS4 exclusive lineup is suddenly looking a lot more appealing, at least in the long term.

God of War 4 Predictions

Sony has yet to confirm the Santa Monica studio's next big project, so it is quite possible that the publisher and developer have been sitting on the announcement until the E3 craze arrived. The studio took a hit when God of War 3 creative director Stig Asmussen left the shop, presumably leading to the canning of its now-dead sci-fi IP.

All that wishful thinking  aside, we have to acknowledge the chance that the tweet actually wasn't a reference to an E3 announcement. The tweet was posted just after LA experienced a 3.7 magnitude earthquake, so it's possible the team at the studio was just having a little fun in the wake of the act of nature. However, if an announcement is to come, we would except it to arrive during Sony's E3 Press Conference the night before E3 opens. The real question is when the game will release.

What do you expect to hear about the God of War series at E3? Do you think Kratos will return or is it time for the franchise to embrace a new protagonist? Let us know in the comments.
