Network Scorecard Week of September 13 - 19 2010

Welcome back to Network Scorecard, where we pit the two major console networks head to head and see who ends up with the best offerings for the week. The battle continues between Xbox Live and PSN, and as always, anything can happen. Like last week, for the sake of this competition, we are including the elite memberships of both networks. That means Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus memberships are in play. However, mobile gaming is not being considered here, so we will not be including any PSP updates. As we get into the Fall season, both Sony and Microsoft are gearing up for the holiday push. Who will prevail this year? Only time will tell. As for this week, we’d better get right into the action.

Round 1 Network Scorecard- Week of September 13 - 19, 2010

Round 1: Game Demos

PSN:

XBL:

  • NBA 2K11 Demo
  • FIFA Soccer 11 Demo
  • Space Invaders Infinity Gene
  • Legend of the Guardians Demo
  • KOF Sky Stage Trial Game
  • Sonic Adventure Trial Game

This week starts like a song we’ve heard before, with the biggest demos canceling each other out. So, unfortunately, nobody gets points for NBA 2K11, FIFA Soccer 11, or Space Invaders. XBL gives us a movie adaption with Legend of the Guardians, the anime looking KOF Sky Stage, and and old favorite with Sonic. PSN might have just a little more punch with Worms 2, and the two Move demos: Eye Pet and the Boom Blox-looking Tumble.

The fun of Worms 2 combined with curiosity about Move give PSN the advantage, and they take our first round this week.

Round 2 Network Scorecard- Week of September 13 - 19, 2010

Round 2: DLC

Both Networks This Week:

  • Rock Band: Seven separate songs by artisits Dio, Juliana Hatfield, Morrissey, The Smiths, and more.
  • Rock Band Network: 5 separate songs by bands Bang Camaro, Quartered, Jonathan Coulton, and Asking Alexandra.

PSN:

  • Mega Man 9: DLC Bundle, $4.99. Purchase all five DLC items for Mega Man 9.
  • Mega Man 9: Themes Bundle. $5.99. Purchase all five themes.

XBL:

Oddly, there are no Guitar Hero tracks available this week. They must be getting ready to drop Warriors of Rock on us. We’re not really getting any new exclusive DLC for PSN this week, just special deal bundles. There is a lot of content, but nothing new and exciting. The Mega Man bundles are really just older content repackaged together. XBL only has one offering for us, but at least it’s new.

New wins the day, and XBL takes our second round. That leaves us tied so far, with one round apiece.

Round 3 Network Scorecard- Week of September 13 - 19, 2010

Round 3: Downloadable Games

PSN:

  • My Aquarium, $4.99.
  • Space Invaders Infinity Gene, $9.99.
  • Worms 2: Armageddon, $14.99.
  • Tumble, $9.99.
  • PSone Classics: Soviet Strike, $4.99.

XBL:

  • KOF Sky Stage, 800 MP.
  • Sonic Adventure, 800 MP.
  • Space Invaders Infinity Gene, 800 MP.

Did I read that right? My Aquarium? No PSN, you don’t get any points for adapting one of Game Rant’s 10 worst Wii games ever. Space Invaders cancels itself out by being available on both networks. When the dust settles, we are left with Worms 2, the Move game Tumble and a PSone game vs. KOF Sky Stage and our old buddy Sonic. I think the advantage here will have to go to PSN, with three offerings vs. XBL’s two.

That brings PSN over the top, two rounds to one so far. Now we have a fight here, people! We don’t want to miss any action, so let’s move on to the final round:

Round 4 Network Scorecard- Week of September 13 - 19, 2010

Round 4: Sales & Special Values

PSN:

  • PlayStation 15th Anniversary PSone Classics Sale: Castlevania: SotN (now $4.99, original price $9.99) and Castlevania Chronicles (now $2.99, original price $5.99).
  • The following games are all on sale at $4.99 (original price $9.99): Monkey Island Special Edition 2: Lechuck’s Revenge, Age of Booty, and Mega Man 9.
  • Monkey Island Special Edition: 1 & 2 Bundle, $7.49.
  • Cuboid Ultimate Bundle, $12.99.
  • Magic Orbz Extreme Bundle, $12.99. Get the game and three add-on level packs.
  • Magic Orbz Level Bundle, $4.99.
  • Mahjong Tales Wisdom Bundle, $10.99. This bundle includes the game, 25 extra layouts, and a Level Editor.
  • Smash Cars Extreme Bundle, $12.99. Get both Smash Cars and Virus Run.

XBL:

  • Special deal on XBL Gold: Set up your renewal now and get 12 months for 40% off at $29.99 + get a Halo: Reach Noble 6 Avatar helmet.
Deal of the Week: Puzzles and Trivia:
  • Puzzle Bobble Live! is on sale at 400MP for a limited time.
  • Get Gyromancer for 800 MP.
  • Tower Bloxx Deluxe and Puzzle Chronicles are both 50% at 400 MP each.
  • Globe Clicker and Arkedo Series – 02 Swap! are both 67% off at 80 MP each.

Castlevania and Monkey Island are a heavy one-two punch for PSN. However, 12 months of XBL Gold for $29.99 with a Reach helmet? That’s cuh-razy. That has to at least cancel out PSN’s combos. We’re then left with basically puzzle games on both sides (remember I said basically). I think the surprise XBL Gold deal has to take the advantage, with XBL taking this round in the final seconds.

Final score this week: With a back and forth volley that wouldn’t stop, we end up with our second draw here at Network Scorecard. Both networks grab two rounds apiece. PSN took Game Demos and Downloadable Games, but XBL won out with DLC and their special deals, especially with their XBL Gold offer. XBL fanboys should take note, I bet that offer won’t be around long. As Fall begins, we gear up for an exciting season to close out the year. We know they’re going to bring it next week. Don’t miss out, check back next time for another scorecard and another sizzling batch of network updates.

So, Ranters, what do you think of this week’s network offerings?

  1. Couldn’t agree more. Nicely done, man, this was tight!

  2. It’s all about that xbox live gold deal.

  3. 10 worst Wii games had to be the hardest list to make ever. Would of been very difficult to narrow down.

I’d be interested to see maybe a total of who has won the most showdowns. Maybe the bottom of the articles could present a total from now.

  4. Has anyone actually seen this 40% off gold deal? I’ve been on Xbox nonstop since Halo came out and I haven’t seen it at all. Other than this website I haven’t even heard anyone else mention it either. The deal must have been up for 10 minutes.

    • From what I can tell, it only shows up for people who do not have auto-resubscribe. That, and it potentially did end yesterday evening.

  5. Everybody wins when they play “Shop Vac” by Jonathan Coulton in Rock Band. Always, every time.
