Mortal Kombat X Johnny Cage

We already knew Mortal Kombat X would find success thanks to the hype generated by developer NetherRealm Studios during their marketing push for the game. However, we didn't expect to hear that Mortal Kombat X is the best-selling game in the series...at least not so soon.

Nevertheless, that's exactly the case, at least according to Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon. Boon took to Twitter to publicly thank all those who have been playing Mortal Kombat X for their support of the developer and the game and for "making Mortal Kombat X the biggest launch in MK history."

The launch has been so successful that it's actually caused issues with the game's servers. Apparently Boon and the rest of the folks at NetherReam Studios didn't expect to have so many gamers playing Mortal Kombat X at the same time. Boon mentioned that the team is working to correct the server issues as fast as they can.

“You made the game FAR exceed our wildest expectations. The mobile and console games have had literally millions of players getting online in a really short period of time, hitting our servers hard.

“We love that so many players want to play MKX and are working (like mad) on all the issues some of you are experiencing! We WILL fix them!”

While it's definitely disappointing for both the gamers and developers when games experience issues, it's comforting to know the issues only cropped up because the game is so successful, rather than because the game wasn't ready for launch. That being said, if NetherRealm Studios is hoping to continue their success with Mortal Kombat X, they'll need to correct the issues quickly and fully. History has shown that if online problems go too long without being fixed, gamers get frustrated and look elsewhere for entertainment.

Boon also mentioned he and his team are listening to player feedback and updating the game to meet the needs of the players. While this undoubtedly includes a few issues players are having with the game, we're sure it also includes simple requests from players about how to make the game better overall. Hopefully the folks at NetherRealm Studios will be able to quickly resolve any issues so they can focus their attention on making the game even better for those playing it.

Regardless of the issues, the game's success is still a fantastic feat for the developer and for Boon. While some of the success is likely due to the game's release date, it also has a lot of do with the improvements the developer made over previous Mortal Kombat games. Hopefully this is a trend we'll see going forward with the franchise.
