Like most masked slashers, Friday the 13th's Jason is hiding some serious grossness under his mask. As the story goes, Jason's deformities are part of the reason that the other kids at summer camp picked on him (in some versions of his origin story), starting the chain of violence that led to his mother's killing streak and eventually his own. Just like in the films, Mortal Kombat X's Jason Vorhees covers up his deformed face with a hockey mask. As it turns out, players can now take a look under the mask if they dare.

Jason's face has been revealed multiple times in the film series and the one consistency is that it is always upsetting. We won't risk grossing anyone out by posting his many faces here, but a quick google search will give readers an idea of what we mean. For horror film fans who are familiar with Jason's usual mug, the Mortal Kombat X take on the unmasked character will likely seem surprisingly tame.

This screenshot popped up on Reddit and reveals a maskless Jason after a win (possibly with his machete fatality). It looks like the user was using a PC with a free roaming camera mod installed and was able to get under the mask for the screenshot. The character definitely looks like his face has some scars, but kind of looks more like Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool than Jason Vorhees...

As a few Reddit users pointed out, because this face is revealed with the help of an unofficial game mod, it's possible that the developers never intended for users to see it. 3D character models are rendered for all of the playable characters, including skeletal structure for the special x-ray attacks. The theory is that the skeletal model for all the male characters is basically exactly the same and what we're seeing here is just skin slapped on top of that.

That said, Mortal Kombat does have a history of unmasking characters (seeing that a few of its most iconic fighters are traditionally masked) and it wouldn't be surprising to see a DLC costume or fighter variation that offers access to a maskless Jason in the near future. Because players are already paying extra to play with this character, it would be nice if that potential addition was offered free of charge. After all, players will soon have three more DLC fighters to purchase from the in-game store.

What do you think of Jason unmasked? Would you pay for a DLC add-on that offered access to an unmasked version of the fighter? Let us know in the comments.

Mortal Kombat X is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS and Android. It will release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in June.
