Ed Boon Teases Mortal Kombat X Guest Characters

Although it's still relatively early in the Mortal Kombat X promotional tour, gamers are already eager to find out which fighters will make NetherRealm Studios' roster. So far, we know that franchise favorites like Scorpion, Sub Zero, and Raiden are on-board, as well as a few new characters like Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade's daughter Cassie, but there's still presumably a lot more reveals in our future.

Speaking to that point, Ed Boon took the stage at EVO 2014 to reveal some of his team's plans for the Mortal Kombat X roster. He doesn't make any promises, but strongly suggests that, in addition to boasting the largest roster yet, MKX will include some interesting DLC characters.

Since this was an EVO event many of the questions focused on minute changes to attributes like walk/run speed and special moves in MKX, but Boon also discussed some big picture stuff. For example, he teased that even if a fans favorite fighter doesn't make it onto the Mortal Kombat X retail roster, there's still a chance he/she/it will be added as DLC.

NetherRealm drew some criticism from fans for the characters they did and didn't put on the Mortal Kombat 9 roster, so it's pretty clear that Boon is trying to get ahead of the backlash this time to reassure fans they will be listening. That way when a character doesn't make the retail version there won't be as big of an outrage.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Scorpion Trailer

Obviously, since Mortal Kombat X's retail roster is not even finalized it's hard to talk about DLC, but Boon did tease that at least one guest character will make an appearance as a post-release add-on. Guest characters have been a relatively small piece of NetherRealm's DLC puzzle, but they have drawn a fair bit of attention regardless. The addition of Freddy Krueger to MK9, for example, was completely unexpected, but fans were ultimately mixed on him. Some thought it was a stroke of brilliance, bringing a brutally violent pop culture character into the game, while others saw Krueger as taking a spot away from another MK character.

On the flip side, the addition of Scorpion into Injustice: Gods Among Us was mostly well received, and was almost expected when talk of a guest character surfaced. Scorpion tends to jump franchises.

Which makes predicting Mortal Kombat X's potential guest character(s) all the more challenging. Freddy Krueger set the bar pretty high, but there's still room for improvement. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait at least a few months to find out who these mystery guest characters might be.

Who would you like to see added to the Mortal Kombat X as a guest character?
