NetherRealm Studios Taking A Break From Mortal Kombat

When one makes a game that manages to get really popular, break sales records, become a best-seller, and so on, it’s expected of the company to make a sequel. And when said game is the latest of a long-running franchise, such as Mortal Kombat, the expectations are even more prominent. And considering that Mortal Kombat won the Spike Video Game Award for Best Fighting Game this year, it makes even more sense that a sequel would be in development as soon as possible.

But as it turns out, the folks at NetherRealm Studios will actually be giving the series something of a break.

Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean that the series is done for good. Ed Boon explained that they would make another Mortal Kombat game in the future. For now, however, they want to focus on other projects. What those projects were wasn’t explained, but it will most definitely be interesting to see what they turn out to be when more information surfaces. Boon followed up on this by saying that there wouldn’t be any more downloadable content for Mortal Kombat, further showing their intent to move on.

The “no new downloadable content” news is a bit surprising, given the leak regarding a Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition. However, that may just be a collection of the downloadable content already available. We’ll have to wait and see for ourselves. As for NetherRealm Studios’s next project, it seems likely that it’ll have to do with something concerning Warner Bros. Interactive‘s IPs.

The most likely candidate is another Batman game, as that is Warner Bros’s most popular franchise right now. NetherRealm Studios already released a title in the series for IOS devices called Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, which had Batman get into one-on-one fights with numerous members of his rogue’s gallery, such as Joker, Two-Face, and Deathstroke. It’s safe to say that another fighting game by these guys that features members of the Batman universe would be a hot seller – though, it is possible that they could work on another character from the DC Universe, considering Warner Bros. Montreal is working on more.

What do you think the next project will be for NetherRealm Studios? When will the next Mortal Kombat game be put into development?

  1. Netherealms take all the time you need…..

  2. But not too long…..

  3. I really really hope is an MK: Mythologies: Raiden!! I sent them two emails begging for this so I hope they got the emails!!! Raiden is the most important character!! We have to play his origins and learn more about the storyline.

  4. I had no problem shelling out $120 bucks for MK(9), I didn’t mind that the only reason to play after unlocking everything in a few days was to better my skills, I don’t mind that none of my friends own it because it’s stil $50, but I do mind when they make one good game after a hiatus, they decide to go back into a hiatus after leaving us at a cliffhanger!!!

  5. I’m kinda glad they are taking some time off at least a year and two years max because I would hate for my favorite fighting game franchise to pull a crapcom on us with 30 different SF games in one year. As long as they say they’re coming back to it i’m happy. Besides that’ll give them an actual chance to come up with even better gameplay and even better ideas for the next game, something crapcom should take notes on.

  6. Better to take a brief rest instead of continuous games (like Madden)

    • Definitely. Happy to hear they arent going to do an annual release (and kill their game in the process) to milk as much money from customers as possible

  7. This is bull krap man.

  8. Merry Christmas ,Christmas top gift

  9. Whyyyyyyy. I want another MK already. I hate playing the same great fighting game for two years. Can’t they just milk one out with all the MK favorites and then go back into hiding. It’s not like they don’t have the story all together.

  10. They are not taking a break. Ed said they are working on both Mk and non Mk projects
