Hardcore ‘Modern Warfare 3′ Player Loses Consciousness (& His Xbox 360)

Modern Warfare 3 Water Bottle

Call of Duty brings out the worst in people. Despite its annually world-record breaking sales numbers and online play records, the franchise continues to split gamers down the middle. It’s arguably the most trolled entertainment franchise every, but also one of the most in-demand and addicting.

When Black Ops came out, GameStop employees were robbed at gunpoint for some copies. When Modern Warfare 3 came out a year later, armed gunmen robbed a delivery truck in France carrying copies of the game. They do this because the games are that popular and that valuable pre-release. The proof is in the pudding. Take for instance, this one kid who played the game for so many consecutive hours his body shut down.

According to WCMH-TV, 15 year-old Tyler Rigby was taken to the hospital earlier this week for dehydration where he was pumped with fluids. The cause? (Spawn) Camping out in his bedroom for four straight days playing Modern Warfare 3. According to his aunt:

“It’s like he was looking at me but he wasn’t there. It was like he was looking through me. We were talking and I heard a thump and I looked over and he just fell.”

I can’t imagine he was doing that well at the game if he wasn’t even providing his body with the required nutrition. Video games are fun but you’re doing it wrong and losing at the game of life if it takes priority over life’s necessities. Take a break.

Unfortunately for Tyler and his video game passion, he’s going to be forced to going forward since his family is taking away his Xbox. Will that cure the addiction? With Black Ops 2 coming in a few months, hopefully Tyler can ween back to a healthy level of gaming so he can step into the franchise’s take on the future. In all seriousness, we’re happy Tyler’s recovering and we hope this is an isolated incident.

  1. Lulz.

  2. I think the parents/guardians need to take some responsibility for letting it get this far. The kid obviously needs some better support at home for this to go unnoticed or unchecked.

    • Agreed.

      • +1

Seriously. Go check on your damn kid every now and then. Geez.

If he’d been missing, his parents might never have seen him again.

        *shakes head*

        • After this I wonder if they’d even care if he was missing.

  3. What is wrong with the parents? How do they let him go 4 days straight without making him shut off the games. Hell, I worry about my son if he’s playing more than 2 hours at a time. On the other hand, this is precisely why my son won’t have a TV in his room.

  4. This all stems back to the parents/guardians as said above, It’s beyond ridiculous but hey, that’s this generation now and it’s only gonna get worse with how these kids act and do things.

  5. Who lets there children play CoD!!!

    • Way to take a serious article and make a dumb troll comment.

  6. Dumbass deserved it. Hopefully he learned something from this experience.

  7. I honestly don’t know how to react to this. Yeah the kid’s parents were dumb for letting him do this, but how does one play xbox for that long? Games are fun to play but I think the most I have ever played in one day is 8 hours. Now a days I can play for 1 hours then I gotta do something productive.

  8. sorta surprised this hasn’t happened with skyrim yet

    • I’m 95% sure it has, just not with a dumbass 15 year old.

  9. That kid either has the most negligent guardians ever, or he has serious problems.
    Four DAYS straight?
I can’t imagine being to play a game for 24 hours straight, let alone 96 hours without stopping.
And I thought I had a problem with enjoying games too much.

  10. Lol. I play 3 games of MW3 and I’m already throwing the disk across the room like a frisbee. CoD used to be great back around the CoD4 to MAYBE MW2 time period (including WaW). Now in general I can’t stand even being on Xboxlive for more than a couple hours.

  11. 4 days straight!? Man kids these days are really pushing it! And yes the parents should’ve noticed something because of FOUR FREAKIN DAYS STRAIGHT! I honestly hope the kid learns something but if he’s stupid enough to play the same game for four hours straight, I think he’s stupid enough to do it again. Hopefully he learns something

  12. Holy crap four days thats crazy

  13. By the way Rob, I like what you did to the cover image of MW3. ;) Ya gots ta hydrate!

  14. I don’t see any hardcore or true gamers on this site. It’s called GameRant (a gaming site) but yet everyone here are pansies who play games for 1 hour a day. Wow, I’m going back to IGN..

    • You do that. This site is for those who don’t spend four straight days gaming.

    • Define Gamer: A person who plays games. So what exactly is a “true gamer?!?”

And “hardcore gamer” is just a silly term that doesn’t really have an agreed upon definition.

Just because some people choose to play a game for only an hour or two a day doesn’t mean that they aren’t a “gamer” and I wont even start on the hardcore part of your comment. Some people actually prefer to socialize with others that doesn’t involve VoIP/in game messaging and want to get away from a screen. Others might not have much time to play.

Point is, you don’t know their situation so calling people a bunch of “pansies” and throwing around terms such as “true and hardcore gamers” is a bit ridiculous and it’s even more so because you are basing those comments on how many hours a day they play.

    • Im sorry, but us grown-ups can’t sit in mommies basement playing games all day. we have things to do, like work and build real interpersonal connections, pay bills and even enjoy *gasp* time with the oppsite sex. Skype and popular alone time sites don’t count. But thank you or not polluting the gene pool! Semper Fi, class dismissed.

      • this ^^^ :D

    • Dude, almost everyone here is a hardcore gamer. Casual gamers don’t keep up with gaming news.

IGN’s comments sections are no fun because at least 300 people comment on every article so you can’t keep up with all the comments. Here, it’s a much smaller community, but it’s easy to keep track of comments.

By the way, you know nothing of our lives. Nobody here just casually states that they only play games for one hour a day. Have fun getting your comments lost among the chaos over at IGN.

      • ….i agree…plus….we get to know each other here… :P

    • Thanks for the comment, Edward.

  15. This story was on my local Ohio news channel yesterday.

  16. Aaaand this is one of the reasons I don’t play CoD as much anymore; The children. Some parent need to accept that 1 an xbox is not a babysitter and 2 if your kid is playing an M rated game, chances are he might come into contact with strong language, possibly even directed at him or her; so don’t get all offended if they come bawling to you about it, when it’s entirely your fault or letting a child play the game. Thats like giving them a playboy or penthouse and getting all indignant when he sees the women all out an on display. Time to grow up parents, they are your CHILDREN, and you are their PARENTS; not their best friends and ‘well-joe-plays-it-why-not-me’ board of sympathizers. Sadly its mostly the morons procreating, so go ahead and ignore this and get idignant again. Semper Fi people, Class dismissed.

  17. Ok like really what has this world come to. I blame both the guardians and the kid.

  18. ok lets be honest, the kid is 15, that is a freshman/sophemore in highschool, he can take care of himself by that point, obviously the parents thought this. They were wrong.

    • They just left him on his own. Until you are 18 parents should play at the very least an advisory role in your life, making sure you don’t go over the limits.

    • @Arnold_dajar

      I agree, to a point.

At 15, I had my first job and did nearly everything on my own. I’m responsible. But I wouldn’t let my son play a game that long no matter how old he is. Of course, when he’s on his own it’ll be difficult to manage and I probably won’t even think about it, but you get my point.

  19. Stupid kid, dumbfounded guardians and parents, s***** society with low standards. The real concern here, is how come his shitbox didn’t get Red Ring of Death yet? :/

  20. “A 15-year-old gamer is hospitalized after playing ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3′ for four straight days until passing out due to hydration.”

Need to correct the cover story guys. Kid passed out from dehydration, not hydration. Heaven forbid you pass out from drinking water, which your body requires.

I can’t believe nobody else noticed this.

    • “Kid drowns, too hydrated”

    • Whoops, in the excerpt you mean. If fixed the typo. It was correct within the post. My bad.

      • Rob,

If I catch one mistake in all the articles I’ve read that you’ve written, you’re not doing too bad. :)

On another note. I do enjoy the style of which how you write. Pretty matter-of-fact, with no assumptions of biased judgement, just stating what you know. I really do wish the rest of the media, especially our American media, would take hints from you. Snap judgement calls, excited to hang someone even though they don’t have a whole story. Having to prove themselves innocent before even being convicted. Oh, wait.. It sounds like I’m focused on Nancy Grace.

It’s been a pleasure. We should chat more often.

        Chris

    • I noticed it, but didn’t feel like pointing it out.
