Modern Warfare 3 Features Folding Gun Scopes & Smart Grenade Launchers

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 XM25 Grenade Launcher

Call of Duty XP, the first ever Activision public event just for the franchise, is only a week away, but there’s still a stream of incoming news about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the 8th installment in the long-running annual franchise.

The latest news from the highly anticipated shooter from Infinity Ward and Activision focuses in on some of the new weapon abilities and mechanics that Modern Warfare 3 will feature and while one of them may seem simple in theory, it’s far from common in video games, yet extremely handy.

What sort of soldier do you play in Call of Duty? Do you run and gun up close like a ninja or do you pick off unsuspecting enemies from afar? For me in most shooters, sniping with long-range weapons is always a treat but it becomes a problem when traversing the maps and finding myself trapped in close quarters because those weapons simply don’t handle well in those situations. Modern Warfare 3 has a solution with scopes that can fold down.

Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward’s creative strategist, spoke with OXM about two specific new additions that will appear in this year’s Call of Duty:

“Say you’re picking guys in windows out long range in Manhattan, but then kick through a door and start clearing a building… You can now fold down your magnifying scope and already have a close-range optic on your gun – so now you’re engaging guys close-target without having to change weapon.”

The other new weapon feature may not put a smile on the face of critics of Modern Warfare 1′s “noob tube” extravaganza, since there will now be a smart grenade launcher that can track hidden enemies. Known as the “Punisher” (official name: XM-25 air burst grenade launcher), this weapon is one you want on your team.

“It’s great for when you’re fighting in an urban environment. If a guy is behind a concrete barrier, you can laser-tag that cover point, fire over it and it will then programme the round to explode one metre past it. Anyone hiding behind it will be showered down.”

If you wish to see the real life tech specs for the XM-25, go here.

We love the scope idea – more gun functionality the better – but can we change fire from rapid to single shot on regular weapons? Still waiting on that. The Punisher we’ll have to wait on to see if it balances well in multiplayer. If it does what we think it does, it may even be a killstreak weapon. That being said, Bowling previously went on record to explain that explosions in MW3 have been nerfed to help keep focus on gunplay.

We’ll find out more at the Call of Duty XP event in early September so follow us for our live coverage of the event – we’ll be there, and so will Kanye West and Dropkick Murphys! In the meantime, enjoy the entertainment that is the EA vs. Activision bashfest.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 releases November 8, 2011 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

  1. Explosions are a regular part of gunplay, and one I tend to use numerous times per match. I dont think they should be nerfed. Imagine, you keep getting spawn killed by a sniper in a bunker or room, so you toss a grenade in there, and upon its detonation, a hit marker or kill is not accompanied with it. This happens rather often in MW2 and BO, and now theyre nerfing explosions? You might as well be throwing water balloons instead of grenades!

    • yeah it doesnt make much sense. maybe theyre refering to grenade launchers? idk

  2. niiice. i never really liked being a sniper but folding scopes? niiice.

  3. Wait, you cannot select the rate of fire of your weapons in COD??? Lmao, that’s been a standard feature in shooters for over a decade now… Wow…

Anyway, that folding scope thing, I don’t understand how you can fold away a magnified scope and then have a cqb scope at hand, what, is it two scopes on a rotating drum?? Unless the guy meant like having an Aimpoint or EO Tech sight with the 3x magnifier behind it with the flip up mount… But if so, his description was pretty poor, guess that’s why he makes games and not weapons, lol.

    • I didn’t see this “folding scope” when playing Spec Ops in MW3 last week so I’m not sure either – then again, I didn’t get a chance to buy more than one add-on for my guns during the mayhem…

      • yeah and its hilarious! the first CoD had weapon fire rate selection. then it disappeared in CoD 2. i liked how it was implemented in MoH. cant wait for bf3 or MW3.

      • @Rob Keys

you can see the folding scope in an earlier trailer or gameplay wall through. Cant rememer which one but it was in a destroyed downtown area. I assumed it was for campaign purposes only.

    • watch e3 gameplay dum dum youl see its a real life gun check it out its badd ass!!!

    • Imagine a regular scope, but without the tube, and just the lenses on a folding mount. Id imagine it’d be something like that.

  4. And I’m sorry, that idiot Kanye West is not exactly a good endorsement for anyone…

    • it’s too bad that idiot Kanye West, is one of the most popular artist’s of the decade

      • Which only proves there are a lot of other idiots out there…

        • ken j, you have brought up the best points so far. kudos to you my friend

  5. The explanations sound… confusing… but AWESOME! :D

  6. What’s so difficult to comprehend here? Pretty cut and dry to me.

  7. why is this “new” news? they talked about this stuff like a month ago in videos and interviews.

  8. It’s an EO Tech scope what they’re trying to explain

  9. Yeah its noob toob explosions that have been nerfed and You didnt see folding scopes in spec ops because its a upgrade for your weapon and its a attachment for your gun in multiplayer.

    • @Tom, you can buy those in Spec Ops Survival and that’s what we played. We just didn’t get that long of a time to see them all.
