The crew at Mojang released the 1.4 update a few days ago which added pet wolves and few minor tweaks (read our complete Minecraft 1.4 update guide for more). What it didn’t bring however, was the complete achievements system which we know will release with the Minecraft 1.5 update.
So, along with achievements, what is coming or should come with the next Minecraft patch? Game Rant Minecraft master John Jacques and I have listed a few of the tweaks we’ve heard may come soon as well as some we’d like to see implemented in the very near future.
We’ve read your comments and heard your concerns about the lengthy time in between updates the the lack of added content/upgrades in general, but we’ve also heard some of your suggestions for what comes next for Minecraft. While we have an extensive list of big picture ideas we’d love to see implemented in the future before Minecraft hits full release, we’ll focus on five little updates we expect or desire to be added as soon as Minecraft Update 1.5:
Achievements
Notch and co. have been at work, setting up stat-tracking and a relatively in-depth achievement system for Minecraft but were unable to get it out in time for the 1.4 update. It should come in the next incremental patch or the next full update (let’s hope we’re not waiting a full month).
Wolves
The tamable wolves were a fun and lovable update to Minecraft but some users have experienced issues with getting them to pass through doorways and worse, disappearing entirely upon exiting the game and re-loading a save.
We’d like to see the wolf feature polished and something fun added, like pet naming and alternate skins to keep track of your wolfpack and add some variety.
Half-Blocks
Half-blocks are essential for detailing those massive structures and in making easily traversable stairwells and hills, but when you stack them, they’re a pain in the butt to take apart with a mining pick as it’ll break them two at a time, instead of just the top one.
What if you could hold right-click when mining, and you’d only mind half of the block away?
Milk & Cookies
A very minor addition to Minecraft with the last patch was cookies. It’s nothing special, as it’s the same mechanic as making bread, but the problem is that you need cocoa beans to craft the delicious baked goods… an item that doesn’t grow naturally in the game outside of dungeon quests. C’mon, let’s add cocoa plants.
We also think it’d be a neat idea to be able to bottle milk and use to restore health.
Dungeons
The randomly generated dungeons are one of the most fun bits of Minecraft to set yourself up on little adventures and treasure hunts, but they’re getting old and stale. Let’s add some variety to the shape and size of dungeons, paving the way for multi-room dungeons in the future. This is the one significant change we want implemented in the next update.
Boats
The boating system is somewhat broken. It can be difficult and frustrating to exit the boat and its controls are problematic at times, leading to exploding boats due to their fragility. We’d like to see those polished off so we don’t have to carry spare boats in our pocket.
-
For the most part, these are minor and sometimes obvious updates but that’s all we expect from the next Minecraft patch. Unfortunately, the bigger picture things like a vast improvement to mobs (bird, mountable horses, etc.) just don’t seem to be in the cards, despite the impressive user community mods which offer this content. They should really hire these modders with money Minecraft is making.
We’ll talk more about mobs, NPCs, craftable items like larger multi-person boats, etc. that we want in the game later. For now, share what little tweaks you’d like to see be added to Minecraft right away.

A compass that points to dungeons.
Giant versions of the monsters that show up in random areas from time to time.
I believe the special compass is an amazing idea. It should be crafted like a clock but instaed of redstone a lapis lazulli block. This would increase the usefulness of the quite pointless but rare ores. The giants would ruin it though. A giant creeper would explode and destroy someones creation and that would ruin it.
I just want them to fix ALL the stinkin’ bugs now! My beds DO NOT re-set the spawn point. it crashes about every 10 – 15 minutes, etc. As it has gone along it has gotten more and more buggy. Yet, they charge money for a buggy beta version that doesn’t seem to get fixed. What a pair they got!
I agree, notch recked the game!
If the game is crashing, then you may need to limit the amount of RAM is uses. You’ll need to download the .exe file, rename it to minecraft.jar, then kick it off with a command-line…
java -Xmx512m Xms512m -cp Minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame
The “xmx” & “xms” arguments set a max size of RAM allow, and an intial size forced (can’t remember which is which off the top of my head). If your comp only has 1-2 gb RAM, then this could help. I play on an older comp, and this trick not only gets passed the graphics card issue (where it would complain abuot not supporting the gfx card), but keeps the game from crashing while playing with only 1gb RAM. Hope this helps.
Any additions that make the world worth exploring! I’m tired of vast expanses populated by just a handful of animals and the same blocks that can be found everywhere else in the world.
That’s a great idea! I’d like to be able to travel really far north to find some sort of snowy masterpiece or ice dungeon, or far south for some crazy desert cave with lots of exotic treasures
My minecraft game worked perfectly on 1.3, but on 1.4, it repeatedly crashes every 10-20 seconds! this is irritable. Notch, please fix this bug as quickly as you can, I am building a 1 to 1 scale of the coliseum and the Parthenon. it is for a project for school. A S.I.P. project. it is due on April 30th. it is for most of my grade and if i cant use minecraft, i will stop resorting to it.
I’d like to see something besides just random dungeons and such. If the terrain generator would start generating random ruins, abandoned towers/castles, and actual structured dungeons with real hallways and such, it would be more interesting to explore.
I think what Notch is doing, though, is the right path. He’s making a robust engine, and then will add official mod support later, so folks can expand on the game in crazy fashion, just like Elder Scrolls. I just wished he didn’t make the game in Java. It requires way too many resources for what it does. Also, if the game would allow you to adjust screen res inside the game. You crank it up, and it uses the 1680×1050 resolution that your monitor is set to, because it doesn’t resize the screen. This is overkill for how simplified the graphics are, and a waste of processing power. You can manually turn your resolution down to 800×600 and MC will still look the same, but perform WAY better … all because Notch hasn’t included an auto-screen resolution adjuster in the game.
In 1.2, my clan server can host up to 100 people easy
1.3, 25 people with no fuss
1.4, we get crippled at 7
Notch needs to wake up and make his coding more efficient. It’s the online community that makes Minecraft half what it is now, and it’s the online community that he’s letting down.
Hey yous i will agree i LOVED MINECRAFT 1.3!!!
but….. i like the features of 1.4!
although i cant play smoothly EVEN ON TINY! please fix!!!
Stop pissing on notch he’s making more improvement everyday
Minecraft is fine!
Your the own that payed for it!
Anyway great game!
I’m sure he’s trying to fix that now!
Minecraft does need a vast amount of improvement, I am totally for the idea of having modders be hired to improve it’s quality and quantity of things to do. This game should also feature Arquebuses and bug fixes.
“An Arquebus is an ancient firearm that can be craft-able using iron, gunpowder, and wood, it can fire iron b-b’s or Gravel. It also works as an alternative of the bow.” Aside from being limited by imagination, I feel limited by the number of resources in the game now. The bugs also need to be fixed, the game feels like a crappy car about to croak with the way it’s been running.
I believe minecraft needs some more items that involve redstone. For example type in ‘minecraft pistons mod’. An actual roallercoster instead of a minecart. It travels at a steady speed and runs on redstone. But this can’t be a flop like the powered minecraft which is coal crazy. A marble block that can only be found near lava. It is better than stone but just weaker than iron. A hammer would also be good. It would be crafted like an axe but on both sides. It is 1.5x faster than a pick at destroying, sandstone, marble, smooth stone and netherrack. The addition of a scorpion mob would also be good. It has very little health, it spawns on sand and drops poison droplets than can be replaced with flint to create poison arrows. For example put in youtube ‘minecraft elemental arrows’. While they have little health they are as fast as the player and when they strike you it poisons yous, slowly dcreasing your health over time. I think that gold and lapis should mak a special compass that Steve Pendelbury posted before me.
I REALLY want notch to add the mo’ creatures mod to the whole game because… I just cant seem to get that mod to work.
also may i say that i havent installed ANY mods and my minecraft works fine and it doesnt crash at all. PROBLEM?????
I want lockable doors with keys!!
You can do that with redstone. Keys would be easier to use though,
If there is a “hell” in minecraft ( the Nether)
Why can’t there be a Heaven? ( Garden of Eden, Mount Olympus, etc.)
Eric, this isn’t religocraft we dont need a “heaven” the neather doesnt even work in smp..
I agree, heaven would be a fun patch. golden border insted of odsidean.
I just would really like sloped blocks or a tool that can cause blocks to become sloped (doesn’t need to be added to the generated terrain). It would make building things that much more stylish and creative. Or perhaps some new style of blocks all together not just sloped. Like arched and circular or something too.
i want new blocks and more crafting things
Mojang has already asked the writer of the pistons mod to release his source to them, so I would love to see that in the next update. The piston has the potential to be a real gamechanger just like redstone. You can now manipulate the environment with redstone, as opposed to just flicking doors open and closed
Trap blocks: a block that is passable when powered. Water and lava can flow through it. Multiple trap blocks that are attached to each other acts as one (meaning, if one is powered, all of them gets passable).
Horizontal fence blocks: looks just like fences that lies down. Acts as fences in every other way. This could be used as an option to glass for roof windows (glass doesn’t always fit style-wise), or as a awesome-looking floor that allows you to see down below it.
The orientation of the fence blocks (west-east or south-north) is determined in the same way as stairs.
please make it possible to store writeable books in bookcases
i was thinking in 1.5 maybe fore adventures they can put bots and that kinda stuff. and on your land can set /setspawn and /sethome. and i dont like how your animals dissapear after a while. and i wish u can give people aniamls. Maybe could untame animals somehow.
