It's unsurprising at this point to hear that Minecraft is making money and raking up insane sales numbers -- the game has simply become a phenomenon. Still, every once in a while it's interesting to get an update on how many digital units the blockbuster continues to move. Minecraft creator Marcus 'Notch' Persson is more than happy to reveal the total sales of his biggest moneymaker, though he had to tweet to Mojang business developer Daniel Kaplan for specifics.

Kaplan replied, stating that Minecraft has sold just over 9 million copies, and is currently sitting at a very pretty 9.2 million units sold. The platforms included in the sales data are PC, Xbox 360, iOS, and Android devices, which makes it a little hard to determine exacly how much money Mojang has made off of the I.P. to date. Regardless, it's safe to say that Minecraft has generated more than enough revenue for the development studio; even the recently released Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was profitable within an hour of its release.

Notch clarified that 6 million of these sales came from the PC version, which started accumulating transactions well before Minecraft's official release this past November; the game has moved another two million units since then. This upward trend for the block-tastic property likely won't be levelling out anytime soon. It's not a stretch to suggest that Minecraft will move more than enough to cross the 10 million mark, which is a huge milestone that many (most?) modern day Triple A games don't even come close to touching.

It appears Minecraft won't be dying anytime soon, so now may be as good a time as any for newcomers to try out the product and see what all of this hubbub is about. There are still plenty of updates coming to every version of the game too, which is great news for everyone anticipating some new content.
