Minecraft is undoubtedly one of the most popular contemporary video games. In fact, the Strong Museum’s World Video Game Hall of Fame inducted Minecraft into its celebrated catalog this past July.

Even after more than a decade, Minecraft continues to grow its player base. Now, that dedicated player base has made an incredible discovery in the form of the world seed used in a famous screenshot from one of the game’s menu screens.

Minecraft has changed a lot since its release back in 2009. Though the game was still in its public alpha phase, it steadily became an internet sensation thanks to content creators at the time. As such, many players have a deep nostalgia for certain aspects of Minecraft, from the game’s music to the menu screens. One such menu screen is known for using a screenshot of the in-game landscape, and is labeled in the game’s files as pack.png.

Pack.png is an actual screenshot from a random world seed that can be generated in Minecraft. Now, after nearly a year of work, the Minecraft community has discovered the randomly generated seed that contains the landscape of pack.png. This isn’t the first time an iconic world seed was discovered in Minecraft, as last month Minecraft players found title screen seed. A Minecraft content creator by the name of SalC1 posted a picture of the pack.png landscape generated by the actual world seed to Twitter earlier today.

The screenshot is from a different angle than the original pack.png screenshot but it is in fact the same exact landscape from Minecraft’s server select menus. SalC1 put out the call for the community to find the pack.png seed in January of this year, so they have been hard at work reverse-engineering a single screenshot for around eight months. Every single Minecraft world seed that is generated is pseudo-random, meaning the chance to actually find the seen based off a single screenshot is incredible, to say the least.

Find and documenting interesting world seeds is among the coolest things the Minecraft community does. Plenty of players online document the best Minecraft world seeds for players looking for ways to find specific biomes or items around their world. While each randomly-generated Minecraft world has something interesting to discover, some world seeds generate some crazy landscapes. All in all, the discovery of the pack.png world seed is a pretty significant accomplishment for the Minecraft community.

Minecraft is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
