Micro-Transactions Coming To Grand Theft Auto Online?

At the moment, nothing brings a smile to many gamer’s faces as much as the words ‘Grand Theft Auto‘.  On the other hand, nothing brings a frown to many gamers’ faces quite like the words ‘micro-transactions’. So new rumors that Rockstar are going to be boosting their already massive profits by using micro-transactions in Grand Theft Auto Online may leave players with a very odd expression.

According to a NeoGAF forum post, imbedded in the coding of Rockstar’s servers is a file that reveals players may be able to use real world money to buy credit cards in GTA Online. The file reveals that the cards range from an in-game $100,000 to $1,250,000 and each one is accompanied by a caption saying:

“Cash is king in this town. Solve your money problems and help get what you want across Los Santos and Blaine County with the purchase of cash packs for Grand Theft Auto Online. All purchased cash is automatically deposited into your character’s bank account. Spend wisely, cash therapy is fleeting.”

Perpetuating the rumour, another user supposedly dug deeper into the file and found pictures of the credits cards, the four offenders being the Red Shark Card ($100,000), Tiger Shark Card ($200,000), Bull Shark Card ($500,000) and the Great White Shark Card ($1,250,000).

Interestingly, Rockstar foreshadowed the move in Grand Theft Auto V with a radio station advert promoting each of the cards.

While some micro-transactions have had a habit of not working out, this kind of implementation is now common practice and it is worth keeping in mind that it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. As long as GTA Online offers enough chance to make money, leaving the choice of buying in-game currency truly optional, this only needs to be a consideration for players who really do want to purchase the credit cards. It is a system that has worked fairly well on other online services, such as FIFA Ultimate Team, meaning that a transaction is more of a short cut than a mandatory purchase.

That is, if this doesn’t end up being an elaborate ruse created by fans to drum up some noise.

  1. Unlike a lot of people I don’t get bent out of shape about micro transactions. As someone who hates freemium gimmicks in games, I would encourage people to wait and see before they make judgements. IAPs are only broken when they allow you gain a huge advantage over other players in multiplayer. If this is the case when GTAV Online is released, then yes, it will suck. If having more in-game money doesn’t give you a distinct advantage over other players other than customization options and extra furniture for your apartment, then it doesn’t matter. No, a Billion dollars isn’t enough, because the next-gen GTA will require an even bigger team, even higher quality assets, even more voice talent, etc etc. Money made by this game will go into making the next one even better (obviously not every dime, but hopefully you get where I’m going with this), so if people want to spent more money on it, more power to them

    • As long as it’s as you explained and just a shortcut, I got no problem with it. But the second they start offering better cars, better guns, or better perks that are only available as micro-transactions, then it’s over for me.

      • True true bro that has ruined a lot of good games look at planetside 2

      • You haven’t visited an ammu-nation yet have you? There’s an entire WALL left open that says got the store to look for this weapon when you highlight a spot. They’re gonna sell guns and they are likely gonna be better than the in-game stuff.

        • What ive beat the game and I actually have a few of the bonus gun that are gonna be out maybe soon.( the desert eagel and melee Hammad’s). YOU should really visit the rockstar main page about the info today. Its impossible as they said they wont be selling.weapons the money you buy will only be uses on cars and property. Also the pvp seems like if the weapons that are released that if.you don’t have the DLC you cant join that game. No one will have a leg up over anyone

  2. Rockstar has always felt like a company that’s more or less on the level – their season passes actually include ALL of the DLC for a title, no nickel and diming on the side. If it’s anything like RDR’s MP we’ll see a mix of free and paid DLC content, and people will be to join their friends who did the PDLC in those game types but will be unable to start them w/o having purchased the DLC in question. They make it work for all playstyles. (I’m guessing money won’t be the same as EXP for GTAO, and thus this will just allow you to buy nicer cars sooner and fancier golden bongs for your apartment

  3. just spend an hour double player glitching on the 25 and 12 g underwater suit cases.. it sucked, but throwing down 5 million on a 80% return after an assassination mission made me a lot more money.. than what some people will start spending real money on. do it as much as possible before they patch it.
