No Metro Last Light Multiplayer

It's been a while since we last heard about Metro: Last Light. It's been even longer since we heard about the game's multiplayer. Unfortunately for those interested, THQ and 4A Games have decided to scrap the elusive multiplayer component.

The decision to cancel Metro Last Light's multiplayer came shortly after E3 2012, THQ revealed today. Developer 4A Games had a small team working on the game's multiplayer, but it eventually "decided to fold the multiplayer team into the main group." According to 4A, the decision is rooted in reactions to the game's E3 demo. While supportive of Metro multiplayer, fans were clearly more interested in the game's singleplayer campaign.

This doesn't mean Metro: Last Light (or any other future Metro games, for that matter) won't have multiplayer. In a small Q&A on the game's website, 4A hinted that Metro multiplayer may yet see the light of day.

"Right now we’re 100% focused on the single player campaign and not thinking beyond that. We don’t like throwing away work though, it’s a project we could potentially return to after Metro: Last Lightships."

4A further revealed that Metro's multiplayer was originally an internal decision, and did not stem from publisher THQ. However, because the multiplayer concept never got past the prototyping stage, single player development wasn't negatively affected. This suggests the multiplayer component didn't play a part in the game's delay to 2013.

As fans of the first game will tell you (myself included), there was always a sort of cautious optimism surrounding the idea of Metro multiplayer. Metro: 2033 excelled thanks to its claustrophobic environments and strong sense of isolation - qualities that would have been hard to replicate in a multiplayer environment. While I won't exactly miss the idea of multiplayer, I can think of one thing the team could should have been working on instead: porting Metro: 2033 to the PS3.

Metro: Last Light releases in early 2013 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. A Wii U version is not planned.
