Kojima Details ‘Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes,’ Debuts Trailer

Konami formally announced Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, the latest game in the long running Metal Gear franchise, at PAX Prime today. Series creator Hideo Kojima was on stage to the announce the game, and even shared ten minutes of footage from Naked Snake’s latest adventure.

As was previously revealed, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will be an open world game, shaking the linear structure that the series has commonly adhered too. In the first gameplay footage, Snake is tasked with infiltrating a prison camp, and is presented with multiple different methods to get he job done. For example, players can sneak in as they always have, or they can commandeer vehicles, like APCs and helicopters. If Snake’s in trouble, players can use flares to call in a friendly helicopter, which can also be used to travel between missions.

If there’s one thing to take from the gameplay footage, it’s that Ground Zeroes looks absolutely gorgeous. Kojima stated that the footage shown is running off a PC build, however the PS3 version will be comparable to what was shown. It is also the first game to use Kojima’s prized FOX Engine, which has already shown off some impressive results. The final product will ultimately look similar to what was shown today – and if you’re this far into the post and haven’t watched the video, you better start scrolling up!

Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes Details Trailer

Unmistakable with his eyepatch and scruffy facial hair, Naked Snake (AKA Big Boss) is aligned as our protagonist once again in Ground Zeroes (returning from his role in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater). The trailer also introduced us to who we expect to be the main villain. The mysterious charred face man in the opening cutscene appears to be head of a military force called XOF – which is FOX backwards. There’s also some international trouble, however with only a snippet of the story to go by – not to mention the series decade-spanning lore – it’s hard to get a good grip of what’s really going on.

If there’s one thing we know for sure though, it’s that Ground Zeroes isn’t Metal Gear Solid 5. Kojima called Ground Zeroes a “prologue,” - making it all the more likely that MGS 5 will release next gen.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will release on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, likely in 2013. As of right now, additional platforms have not been announced.

  1. Excuse me Screen Rant. This is BIG BOSS AKA Naked Snake. Not Solid Snake. Solid does not have an eyepatch. That is a bit of a slip up.

    • Not to mention this one bears the MSF logo from PeaceWalker, which was only around in the 70s, etc, with Big Boss.

      • Fixed.

Like I said, that decade-spanning lore can be quite troublesome :P.

      • Wish I had played Peace Walker :(

        • play it now. With the gf collection, it’s available in almost every console.

        • play it now. With the hd collection, it’s available in almost every console.

  2. Big boss! Yes, the best character in the whole series! Don’t like how they have made him look so different though, would of prefered it if he looked like he did in MGS4. Then again, they changed how Solid Snake looked in the MGS4 trailers, and the other characters. Fingers crossed. Otherwise amazing.

  3. “As was previously mentioned, Ground Zeroes will once again star series protagonist Solid Snake, returning as “Old Snake” from Metal Gear Solid 4.”

This is erroneous. The character is Big Boss/Naked Snake, and the game’s events take place after MGS: PeaceWalker. The characters of Chico and Paz mentioned therein are from that game, and the two men discussing the infiltration are Kazuya and Snake from that game based on the voice actors.

  4. This better be on next-gen consoles… I love MGS with a passion. Seeing this game play makes me happy! :) I feel like a kid again lol

    I bought MGS4 before I even had a PS3, that’s how bad I wanted it.

  5. I doubt the PS3 version is going to look as good as this.

  6. The graphics are absolutely stunning. I couldn’t believe when I saw that the playable gameplay had practically the same graphical quality as the CGI cut scene. I’m curious as when this game is occuring. From the looks of it, it almost seems like this is happening right after MGS4 and Big Boss is back in action. I’m also gonna have to play Peace Walker since this ties into that. I cannot wait for this game, but the only bad thing about this is that with this coming out, MGS5 will take even longer now to come out.

    • This is after PeaceWalker, which takes place in 1974. It’s not too far after the events, because they’re discussing events that are fall-out from that game, plus the boy (Chico) isn’t much older apparently than he is in PW. So this follows that PSP/PS3 release, not MGS4 (in which Big Boss finally passed).

  7. Looks really ugly to me,and too realistic !
Don’t like the look of this game!
Gameplay could be cool otherwise !

    • you are crazy.

    • Ugly and too realistic? Apparently you’re the .000000000001% who prefer bad graphics. I didn’t know there was anyone out there like that.

      • Haha…a few are !
Another thing was the Music, the iconic Metal Gear Theme Melody was totally missing..especially when the showed Snakes Face !
Looking at the end credits..the new guy seems hasn’t done his homework and just want to brand the game with his own style !

        Hope I am, wrong !

  8. PART 1: OKAY TO CLEAR THINGS UP, HERE IS MY TAKE ON THINGS. THE GUN GIVES IT AWAY. AS YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE ALREADY KNOWN BY THE EYEPATCH, THAT IS BIG BOSS HOLDING AN FN FNC (FABRIQUE NATIONALE CARABINE), A BELGIAN ASSAULT RIFLE IN SERVICE SINCE 1979. SO THAT MEANS THIS STORY IS GOING TO TAKE PLACE SOME YEARS AFTER 1979. BY THEN SOLID SNAKE WOULD BE ABOUT 9 YEARS OLD, MAKING HIM ADMISSIBLE AS THE BOY IN THE CAGE.

PART 2: IN THE BOX ART RELEASED WITH THIS PRESS RELEASE, THE ONE THAT SHOWS BIG BOSS (PRESUMABLEY) IN A SIDESHOT, THE PICTURE IS INTENTIONALLY FLIPPED AND REVEALES THE BADGE WHICH IS THE MILITAIRES SANS FRONTIERES, BIG BOSS’S PMC IN PEACE WALKER. BUT WHY FLIP IT? WELL MY TAKE IS LIKE THIS. BIG BOSS’S SPECIAL FORCES GROUPS MSF AND FOXHOUND ARE BEING MANIPULATED BY A CERTAIN THIRD PARTY, BUT TO DIFFERENTIATE THEMSELVES FROM THE REAL FOX UNIT, THEY FLIP IT SO THAT IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE FOXHOUND OR MSF TO THE UNKNOWING.

PART 3: NOW THE PICTURE IS INTERESTING IN THE SENSE THAT IF ITS FLIPPED, FOX ON THE OTHER SIDE WHICH ISN’T VIEWABLE MUST BE A FLIP ALSO XOF, BUT YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE IN THIS VIDEO AT 07:14 THAT BIG BOSS’ FOX BY HIS SHOULDER ISN’T FLIPPED. ANOTHER INTERESTING FACT IS BIG BOSS IN THIS VIDEO LOOKS REMARKABLY OLDER THAN HE DOES IN THE PICTURE. IT MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT BE IT, BUT I AM CALLING IT THAT THE BIG BOSS IN THE IMAGE IS SOLID SNAKE BEING USED BY ANOTHER CORPORATION, PRESUMABLY XOF ALAS FROM “FOX,” TWO PHANTOMS(A PLAY ON THE WORD FAKE) WERE BORN.

PART 4: IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT SNAKE JOINED FOXHOUND IN THE EARLY 90′S AND WAS PERSONALLY TAUGHT CQC BY NONE OTHER THAN WELL BIG BOSS. NOW MY GUESS IS THAT THIS STORY IS GOING TO SPUN ABOUT 2 DECADES AND BE PLAYABLE WITH MULTIPLE CHARACTERS. SNAKE IN THE CAGE HAS BEEN BRAINWASHED AS A DOUBLE AGENT AND GETS RESCUED BY BIG BOSS AND SOMETIME DURING THE STORY WORKING UNDER FOX AKA XOF.

PART 5: UNBEKNOWST TO BIG BOSS THINKING THAT HE IS WORKING WITH THE REAL FOX, HE TRAINS AND LEARNS CQC UNDER BIG BOSS’S COMMAND, BUT HE IS ALSO TAKING ORDERS FROM THIS XOF AND BELIEVES IT BE FOX, AND SOME TIME DURING ALL THAT, SOLID SNAKE GETS BRAINWASHED TO KILL BIG BOSS BY XOF.

PART 6: LASTLY, NOW WORST CASE SCENARIO IS THAT THE BOY IN THE CAGE IS NOT SNAKE AND ITS CHICO, SEEING THAT IT WAS MADE CLEAR IN THE EXTENDED VERSION OF THIS TRAILER. BUT I WOULDN’T WANT THAT NOR WOULD I COUNT OUT MY THEORY, KNOWING HIDEO’S HUMOR ON PULLING TRICKS. I WOULD WANT A GAME THAT TELLS BOTH SOLID SNAKE”S ORIGIN AND GIVES A GOOD END TO THE BIG BOSS. INITIALLY, THAT IS THE ONLY IMPORTANT STORY LINE THAT IS MISSING IN THE MGS SAGA AND MY IMPRESSION ON HIDEO KOJIMA’S OPEN WORLD.

PART 7: BEST WORST CASE SCENARIO, IF ITS CHICO IN THE CAGE, HE’S OLDER THAN HE IS, CHICO IS MALNOURISHED AND LOOKS WAY YOUNGER THAN HIS AGE, SO HE MIGHT LOOK 12 BUT REALLY BE IN HIS 20′S WHICH IN TURN MAKES IT VIABLE TO TELL SOLID SNAKE’S ORIGINS. THAT’S MY TAKE.

  9. I’m very impressed by the graphics! The best I’ve ever seen. However, I’m confused about the open-world structure. I watched the extended demo on IGN, and at the end, whoever was playing the demo didn’t finish it because they were out of time, so they hopped into the helicopter and flew somewhere. This leads me to believe that there is some sort of HQ where you choose which mission to do. But I don’t see how that will work. There will be multiple missions for you to choose from, but the order in which you complete them doesn’t matter? I don’t like that structure at all.

  10. They need to let this game series die. Put a shoot gun in it mouth and pull the trigger!

    • I love how you say this without even giving a valid reason as to why they should.

    • Or having no idea of Kojima’s plans and how he has wanted to kill them for some time now.
