The upcoming Metal Gear Online DLC campaign will be called 'Cloaked in Silence', will feature Quiet as a playable character, 'Appeal' poses, and three brand new maps.

Although it's been several months since Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was released, Konami has managed to keep players interested by focusing on the Metal Gear Online multiplayer component of the game. Today, the developer has officially announced a new Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain online multiplayer DLC campaign entitled "Cloaked in Silence".

Named after the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain single-player campaign mission, Cloaked in Silence will add the sniper Quiet as a new playable character. Players will be able to take out targets from a distance with Quiet's sniper rifle, traverse across maps in seconds using her vocal chord parasite-induced speed, and make use of her temporary cloaking ability in order to sneak up on enemies.

The DLC comes with a new "Appeal Action" feature which unlocks a series of special poses for each character, as well as three brand new maps. Descriptions of each map by Konami are available below:

  • Coral Complex: A dedicated Motherbase environment, allowing players to access tall towers and use storage containers and other internal areas as cover for tactical advantage. Coral Complex mixes open areas and a myriad of hiding opportunities.
  • Rust Palace: Set within Afghanistan, the Rust Palace is a large multi-level building. The skeletal nature of the decrepit ruin means that cover is scarce, while the internal areas are rich in dusty rooms and high-up sniping positions.
  • Azure Mountain: An outdoor plain under Africa’s baking sky. A small cluster of buildings offers scant cover, with only derelict walls and occasional scrubland surrounding the massive rock known locally as the Cradle of Spirits.

The Cloaked in Silence DLC pack will be launched in March at a cost of $4 while several "Appeal" pose DLC packs will also be released for $2 each.

For players not wanting to pay for new Metal Gear Online content, a new and free competitive mission called "Sabotage" will be released alongside the upcoming Cloaked in Silence expansion. Here's the description of the mission from Konami:

"Attackers must destroy or fulton an enemy missile before the round expires; but to access the missile, attackers must first hack into the Terminals to deactivate the Electromagnetic (EM) Barrier that is protecting it," says the description. "Once the Terminals are hacked and the EM Barrier is deactivated, defenders can choose to reactivate the Barrier or protect the Missile."

While Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was released to critical and commercial success, the launch of its Metal Gear Online component was marred by a host of server problems and Konami was forced to issue an apology and a significant amount of in-game bonuses to fans. Since then, Konami have addressed the issues through a series of fixes and managed to bring Metal Gear Online up to the standard of its high-quality single-player story mode.

This latest announcement also indicates that Konami intends on supporting Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain for some time, despite the drama-filled departure of Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima. While Kojima has partnered up with Sony and launched a new studio, Konami has expressed its intentions on continuing the Metal Gear franchise without Kojima. It's a bit of a shame how the Konami-Kojima relationship broke down because the drama overshadowed the fact that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was one of 2015's best video games. With Kojima focusing on a completely new video game with Sony, players will have to settle for a future with a Kojima-less Metal Gear franchise.

Metal Gear Online's "Cloaked in Silence" DLC campaign will be available some time in March. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
