Mass Effect 3 Trailer Revealed at Spike VGAs

It’s finally happened and it’s likely that nobody is overly shocked about it. I’m speaking of course of the long-awaited official announcement of Mass Effect 3 from BioWare. The trailer made its world exclusive debut at this year’s Spike Video Game Awards, and it certainly did not disappoint.

What the trailer didn’t touch on is the rumored multiplayer aspect that many fans are dying for (co-op!), but it does end with a shot of the franchise’s hero, Commander Shepard.

The trailer begins with an unknown soldier positioned in a tower with a large sniper rifle. He begins talking about a massive invasion that caught the planet off-guard, but nobody knows who or what the invaders are. “Two million dead in the first day. Another seven million by the end of the first week,” he says. The man injects himself with some kind of medicinal stim pack (an antidote perhaps?) and carelessly tosses the empty canister to the side.

As he finishes injecting himself he notices that some humans are being chased by one of the invaders and he makes quick work of the mysterious enemy shrouded in dark clouds and this is where the trailer really gets interesting. You can check it out the official first trailer for Mass Effect 3 right below.

Yeah, that tower that the British gentleman is sitting in Big Ben. So that means that Earth is in grave danger of being completely destroyed. Could it be the revenge of the Reapers? Game Trailers certainly seems to confirm that hypothesis with their description of the VGA debut trailer.

“The Reapers’ vengeance threatens Earth. The third chapter of the epic Mass Effect series debuts at the Spike Video Game Awards 2010!”

Mass Effect 3 is scheduled to land on Xbox 360, PC, and presumably the PS3 just in time for the Holidays in 2011. Check out all of the new trailers and more from the 2010 Spike Video Game Awards and follow us on Twitter @GameRant.

Are you excited for Mass Effect 3? Are you at all surprised it was revealed at this year’s Spike VGAs?

  1. Hurray! This isn’t a very long wait at all considering Mass Effect 2 came out a little under a year ago.
I can’t wait to continue the battle with my male paragon and my female renegade Shepard’s.

  2. This trailer is AWESOME!!! The sooner that we have a either a live-action or cgi-based Mass Effect film/tv series the better.

I have a bad feeling that the turnaround time from Mass Effect 2 to Mass Effect 3 is very short. Bioware has become my favorite gaming studio because of their attention to detail and the care they put into making their games. I only hope that EA is not putting to much pressure on Bioware and as a result Mass Effect 3 will not be all that it could have been (ex. Lucasarts and “Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords”).

    • Joseph,

The turnaround time shouldn’t be an issue; they have been working on ME3 since before ME2 was even released.

  3. Really effective trailer. I was getting so hyped up while watching it. I’ve mentioned in other mass effect related comment threads I’ve been looking for an excuse to play through the series again, I think it’s time to go ahead and pull the trigger and do it.

  4. YES! YES! 1,000X YES! My favorite game franchise won’t leave me hanging for too long til the next installment. I love the Mass Effect universe and story!

  5. Mass Effect 3! Can’t wait to see how the story ends. Glad it turned out to be this rather than some sort of side story.

  6. Yeah BABY!!! Bioware, I LOVE YOU!!! Mass Effect 3!!! YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Bring it! Bring the Reapers! Let me show them my wrath!!!!!!!

  7. This series transformed my life – by far my favorite, and the trailer had me drooling. My name is Shepard and this was my favorite trailer in the Citadel.

  8. God Damn I can’t wait for this. :D

  9. I hope i can get a nice romantic getaway w/ Miranda after I demolish some reapers

  10. i just hope the help shepard brings isnt some stupid ancient alien race or something else that just pops up in the final game that doesnt feel like it belongs. but i hav faith in bioware to deliver something amazing

  11. Please let the characters move around the ship and not run out of dialogue, lol. And bring back my MAKO so I can *choose* to drive around if I want to.

And, AND, scrap the ammo/coolant system. It didn’t make sense or work correctly.

    • haha, man garrus was the worst. I thought I was tight with this guy, been through hell and back, saved his life again, and now I go to chill and he says “Come back later, I’ve got work to do.”?!?!?!

What a jerk. I didn’t even mention how messed up his face looks now.

    • I think the ammo/coolant thing was Bioware’s way of trying to make the shooting portions of the game more like a Third Person Shooter. I honestly didn’t like it either, but it did force you to start using different weapons in the middle of a fight instead of just using your favourite.

I did really hate the Mako though. I just replayed Mass Effect 1 a couple of weeks ago and really tried to avoid unnecessary trips in the thing.

As for not letting characters run out of dialogue, exactly how much dialogue do you expect them to record for each actor? :p

    Then yes, yes I am.
