Many big film studios have found themselves caught up in major controversy lately. Warner Bros has been under fire for its mass cancellation of upcoming projects and Marvel Studios has faced some major backlash for its treatment of the VFX artists that work for them. However, Marvel Studios is attempting to make some changes following the outcry.

Some VFX artists who work for Marvel Studios claimed that at times they are working 80 hours a week for months on some Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. In an exposé by IGN, the working conditions were described as “prolonged periods of crunch, extremely limited resources, and a seemingly endless cycle of rewrites and reshoots that pushes outsourced VFX studios to the limit."

In the midst of the outcry about the grueling conditions for VFX artists at Marvel Studios, there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel. The outlet's sources have claimed that Marvel Studios has since been dividing up the work among VFX studios, so artists don't feel pressured and rushed. The source recalled what it was like to do VFX for the third act of an MCU film, stating, “if you have the third act, you are in for the most pain.” This is due to the third act of Marvel Studios films always including a massive fight scene, which calls for many changes in the VFX that appears on-screen. However, now they are allowing this work to be divided up among VFX studios.

Marvel Studios VFX Crunch

This is different from the past when Marvel Studios would have one studio do the entire third act of the film, but some other VFX artists have stated that there still needs to be additional changes made, one of them being unionization. Disney has yet to respond to the claims, however, others from Marvel Studios have. She-Hulk executive producer and head writer Jessica Gao supported VFX artists unionizing at the Television Critics Association recently, stating, “It’s terrible that a lot of artists feel rushed and feel that the workload is too massive.”

Although the changes Marvel Studios has made behind the scenes are small, VFX artists are definitely feeling some weight lifted off their shoulders, which is a small step in the right direction for Marvel Studios. However, there is still a long way to go when it comes to making the work conditions for artists on these large projects comfortable and supported as they help bring these films fans know and love to life.
