The oddly secretive upcoming Marvel MMO from Gazillion Entertainment hasn’t earned itself that much buzz online. Part of that is due to how they’re slowly revealing only images of characters through a Tumblr and a Twitter account that has less than 2000 followers, and the other part is because no one knows what its gameplay is going to be like.
What we were told from the unveiling of the game, which tentatively referred to as Marvel Universe Online after the previously cancelled MMO in development from Cryptic Studios, is that this would be for core gamers and comic fans, as an alternative to the kid-directed Super Hero Squad Online. Now the game has an official title, but it’s not exactly as ”hardcore” as they previously labelled the game.
The free-to-play game will simply be titled Marvel Heroes and while Gazillion, Secret Identity Studios and Marvel Massively Multiplayer Society (MMMS) revealed nothing else about the game, they did release another character image.
Say hello to the Marvel Heroes version of Peter Parker, uh, I mean Spider-Man. He looks like Spider-Man. [Click to Enlarge]
The more we see from Marvel Heroes the more we’re finding ourselves concerned. We still haven’t seen gameplay, but from the character designs released, the game is clearly not going for any sort of realistic or gritty approach. Just take a look at Wolverine and Deadpool’s designs to see.
We do enjoy the fact that the game will let players actually play as the heroes from Marvel Comics, but we don’t know how that works in an MMO setting, unless this really isn’t an MMO at all, and rather some sort of party-based instanced affair.
As for gameplay, there’s also a big question mark surrounding that, RPG elements, or or complex/simple combat will be. What we’re picturing right now is something reminiscent of our favorite Marvel co-op games X-Men Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
What are your expectations of Marvel Heroes?

to bad dc universe is the better game.
We haven’t seen the Marvel game…
Clearly.. do you have twitter? I love to listen to unintelligent people. And I would definitely follow you.
i wonder how they’re going to approach character skins/costumes. i hope they allow for full customisation (as in being able to put dooms cowl on magneto, or gambits jacket on wolverine) otherwise there are going to be like 500 different coloured ironmen flying around everywhere, and idk about you guys but that would be real annoying.
i have faith though, as they have said themselves that this game will have the biggest roster of marvel character in a game to date, plus they have comic legends working on narrative, the game is hinted at being f2p (hopefully they have ethics and don’t throw transaction items everywhere).
the only thing i’m worried about are:
character abilities (if they have all/most marvel characters then there will more then likely be alot of copy/pasting, or will combat be like it was in MUA?)
customisation (i want more then colour and suit variants)
and mission variety, alot of MMO’s suffer from lack of variety, thus players really have to role play to forget the dull/redundant missions.
waww…spidy is my fav superhero…they ruined all my expectations for this game. Why the cartoony crap? seriously, doesn’t ANY developer that makes superhero games even LOOKED at Artham Asylum and Artham City yet??? don’t they understand that THAT’s the type of style we gamers want, reallistic graphics and really fun combat with upgrades here and there WITHOUT going through MMO style bs and the “point, click, automatic fighting without any reaction” crap. Damn, why can’t they EVER do anything right??? >>>.<<<
you clearly haven’t played a MMO before, otherwise you would know that mmo’s mainly consist of mouse clicks and keyboard shortcuts, if you cant play like that then stick to you’re simplistic borefest. not everyone likes realism in a game and i doubt anyone would with a universe as out there as marvel’s one, batman is a realistic character so the ‘realistic’ textures suit his world. on that note did you even bother looking at the textures in AC, they where repeated throughout and the whole damn game looked dull and depressing and most the interiors of buildings looked and felt the same.
peoples opinions vary, yes but what you are saying consists of pure carnal knowledge and lack of understanding about gaming and game dev. batman AC’s combat was boring repetitive and time consuming, where as mmo’s can vary between super fast (for high levels) or slow (against dungeon bosses), there is no variety in speed or skill required during combat in batman, it simply comes down to how fast you can press buttons, where as most mmo’s require planning (use of skills), strategy and team work.
the only reason people praise the new batman games is b/c they’re different from the generic hero games, it doesn’t necessarily make them ‘uber epic’ or ‘what people want’, it just means they got lucky that most hero games suck and that theirs was different to the norm (plus they had a bigger budget, longer dev time etc). narrative wise the duo are boring and repetitive, combat is boring and repetitive, no proper sense of exploration, textures are dull/depressing and repetitive, voice acting is decent (at best) and the boss fights are an insult to anyone with an IQ above their age.
Ok, I admit I might’ve sounded wayy too harsh up there, I apologize if it insulted you that much. I was just mad really mad because what I was hoping for did not exceed my expectations. I’m a superhero fan, no matter DC or Marvel, but I got bored of DC Online because of the type of gameplay it produced, to me how a game looks sets the atmosphere and type of game I’d prefer, and atleast TRYING to look reallistic is enough, so games like LEGO HP, even though I’m a huge HP fan, I kind of get annoyed by because the whole lego material it’s made out of takes the experience away from me, I’d rather the EA’s look for the games. The actual gameplay I enjoyed surprisingly, but it mostly was because I was able to play cooperatively with my little brother and sister. Realism as in decent graphics that are not trying to be cartoony and animations that are fluent and I can actually feel, Assassin’s Creed is a perfect example, amazing story and gameplay aside, while the graphic textures on the buildings might not be the best compared to more higher graphical games like Battlefield 3, the game’s graphics have that reallistic atmosphere, with all the awesome animations and facial behaviours and cutscenes and stuff that really immerse you in a game. Games like DIABLO III for example, the trailer I saw for it made me think it was going to be an awesome action adventure game with regular controls for an action game and etc, but really pissed me off when I saw it was the whole point and click stuff. Now I don’t hate all point click games, I loved Roller Coaster Tycoon series, even if they were point and click, because once I was able to setup my card in that over the top view and etc, I can get my camera and go exploring all my attractions as if I’m actually in a park. The immersiveness for that was the actual going on the rides and stuff, while the immersiveniss on these games, though they are completely different genres, are meant to be you actually being your character, and when my character is moving unnaturally fast and not having proper animations and reactions for getting hit at(basically, in Runescape for example, 2 characters just stand there doing the same few moves with no rection, just until one’s health meter depleets and THEN they’ll have a proper reaction to the damage. Games like Final Fantasy also take me out of the experience with the whole “Your turn to attack, ok now go back and wait for him to hit you and hope your DEFENCE XP is high enough so your character by chance will defend himself”.
The combat in games like AC and Batman take more than just mashing the button, if you mean skill by actually timing your moves and knowing what you’re doing, in Batman every move you do has a reaction, and your timing for moves are critical as when you time your attacks right, you will do double the damage and be able to do your special moves much more frequent, while you have to be aware of your enimies trying to get you and you keeping your eye out to press the right defensive move or else you get punished. Every action has a realtime reaction and consequence, while in MMO games it’s all turn based basically or the reaction is basically the only next animation that will follow after one’s health bar depleets, really takes me out of immersion. The boss battles introduce more moves and challenges for you to conquer during your battles, keeping an eye out for even more varying attacks thrown at you, some that you can deflect, some that you can reverse, some that you’re only hope is getting out of the way while minding even more about your surroundings and seeing what gets thrown at you even more. In Assassin’s Creed games, it’s the same immersive concept, attacking your opponents while keeping an eye out on your enimies actions and reactions and timing your moves carefuly, with consequences and actions, reactions, all happening in real time. There are many different variety of tools and weapons at your disposal which you have to plan your actions even more carefuly, including all the different type of enimies which, in realtime, have different reactions to your moves, so you can’t just use the same movies and dodges and this and that on all the types of gaurds. The new additions of bombs make your work even more strategic opening a variety of more ways for you to perform your moves, and get reactions in realtime. All this plus gorgeous graphics and storytelling and etc that captures and immerses you even deeper into the game. If you think going on quests so your xp meter fills more so you’ll be able to to the same stiff animation move on your opponents over and over again, with barely no reaction to your attacks by the enimy which makes you look like your hitting an invisible wall is not “dull/depressing and repititive” then don’t even bring up IQ talk in here. “decent voice acting at best”…???? Have many MMOs even got nominated for voice acting and etc in any voice acting awards given by any awards giving site, show, etc? All those nominees and winners are ones from action adventure games that involve more dynamic gameplay, graphics, animations and etc. Check Nolan North for example, voice acts both Desmond Miles and Nathan Drake, and does full mo-cap for Drake’s character which makes the animations even MORE impressive and immersive. That’s why people like him get mentioned in voiceacting and etc. How can you take voice acting seriously with stiff animations and etc of the character producing the sound…imagine Dumbledore dying with Snape having a tear in his eye in a cartoony or LEGO way…very impressive and immersive… -_-
Wow that was a long post!
I didn’t actually read it I just wanted to comment that it’s suuuper long =)
lol dude, I was just listening to music and typing away, didn’t notice how long it was until I posted it. Gotta be the longest comment in GR history?
D
Personally, I’ll still give it a shot. Making you play as Marvel FC’s is a smart idea, ’cause every other superhero game out there makes you make your own character to personalize to your needs. Very few games out there really touch base with the actual fandom; DCUO does this very gently, but not enough to make a huge impact. So, good for Marvel.
While I agree that the art style is kinda concerning, I honestly don’t mind. I think it’ll still be a fun affair regardless (or I hope so, anyway), and I’m looking forward to playing as some of my favorite Marvel heroes (and with any luck, possibly villains, too).
if you want to play as a hero in an rpg atmosphere play marvel ultimate alliance 1, really good game, and looks alot like this mmo. the 2nd one is pure garbage so don’t bother, it just looks pretty.
THAT’S WHAT A TRUE MMORPG IS ALL ABOUT. Yeah, be cool to play as a Marvel Hero..but there are already games out there where you can do that. And not one is an MMORPG styled game. DCUO has gotten it down for certain. Half the fun is creating your own character… how one would prefer to just play the cookie cutter is beyond me. Mass Effect tries to do it…. but is still the same character. Maybe that’s what Marvel is intending, just different style possibilities…. but why not just create your own with power sets?
If the game is simply based on Fandom like they say, and will be nothing but 1,000,000 Spidey’s, Wolverine’s, and Deadpool’s running around all looking the same… then that is extremely lame. The game won’t last over a year with that guise. Simply be something one checks out because it’s F2P…. and then checks out, period.

People keep riding the marvel bandwagon but they solely rely on their half decent movies. Who want’s to watch avengers for two hrs to watch hulk destroy locke in 2 secs? waste of my time… and the mmo is going to be garbage… their new books are worthless… nothing they have matches the new batman in value….. Marvel is falling to dc. DCUO is fully creative and great. Marvel’s s*** is going to be ass. I feel sorry for my marvel buddies it’s really time for marvel to kick it in gear or kick rocks… you’re spoiling it for DC who are doing a great job right now. We don’t need movies… this is about comics. Last thing I need is to see Denzel Washington Playing Batwing, Angelina Jolie ruining Batwoman, Just like the dude that ruined the lantern and the idiots who ruined all marvel charictors forever… total non-sense. at least the games stay truer to the nature ofthe character and i don’t have to watch popular actors ruin my heroes.
