The hype train rolls on for Capcom's upcoming fighter Marvel vs Capcom 3. Following the pattern of revealing new characters at the big expos and trade shows, Capcom took GDC Europe as a sign to fill in two more silhouettes from the big Marvel vs Capcom 3 roster in the sky. This time, Capcom revealed Viewtiful Joe from the Capcom side of things and Dormammu from Marvel. And while neither come as huge surprises, it is still nice to see an official announcement for both. Viewtiful Joe is likely the more well known character of the two, as he has starred in several of his own games, originally appearing on the Gamecube in 2003 as part of the "Capcom Five," games announced initially to be Gamecube exclusives. The first game was generally met with a lot of positive critical reviews and even received a PS2 port later in life. More recently, fighting-game fans were able to take him for a spin in the Wii fighter Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. And now with his official inclusion in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, players will get to take him out for a fight in HD.

Dormammu, however, is likely lesser known to many players and many comic fans as well, even though he was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and regularly featured in Doctor Strange comics. Dormammu's age is undetermined and he may be millions of years old. Spending his time in the "Dark Dimension," Dormammu seeks to pretty much take over everything known and unknown and plant himself as the glorified deity. So yeah, he is a bad guy and wants to really mess stuff up.

After getting some hands on time with the game at E3 and then again at Comic Con, I have to say I was already pretty excited for this game. It is really up my alley as a Marvel fan, Capcom fan, and fighting game fan. And playing it only further solidified those feelings. Even in its early stage, the game felt tight and looked gorgeous. All it really needed was some balancing and more characters. And since we all knew more characters were coming, it is nice to see some more obscure-type characters officially revealed.

I always like it when "minor" characters are given the opportunity to expand their fanbase and shine in "mash up" type games. Sure, Capcom needed to include Wolverine and Ryu, and yes characters like Thor are being included because of the upcoming Thor and Avengers movies, but knowing that we also get characters like Dormammu and Amaterasu, yes please!

Marvel vs Capcom 3 is due for release in the Spring of 2011 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
