While his platforming adventures may get the most attention, Mario has also been featured in countless sports games over the years. Virtually every Nintendo console in existence has had a Mario sports game of some description, and now it looks like the Nintendo Switch will be getting another one for its library. A recent trademark has suggested that a new Mario Sports game is on the way for the Switch.

Originally posted on Reddit and found by Go Nintendo, it appears as though Nintendo has filed a trademark for Mario Sports in Australia and Europe. Nintendo filed the trademark on May 14, and it doesn't expire until 2030. It's possible that Nintendo filed this trademark just to protect its IP, but it's also possible that this trademark registration is in anticipation of a new game announcement.

For those who may not be aware, Super Mario's 35th anniversary is this year, and Nintendo is expected to celebrate the occasion in some big ways. It's already been confirmed that Super Mario Jenga and Monopoly sets are coming, but one has to imagine that Nintendo will also be celebrating with new video games. A Super Mario sports game could be a big way for Nintendo to celebrate the franchise's anniversary, as well as give the Switch some more compelling content for the rest of 2020.

Rumor has it that one of the big ways Nintendo will be celebrating the Super Mario anniversary is with a collection of 3D Super Mario games. If the rumors are to be believed, a Switch collection combining Super Mario 64Super Mario SunshineSuper Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 is set to launch for the Switch in the near future.

If these games are indeed in development, it seems like Nintendo will make the announcement during a Nintendo Direct presentation. No main Nintendo Direct presentation has been announced at this point, but rumors have been swirling that one could come by the end of July or at some point in August.

If a new Mario Sports game is in development, it will be interesting to see if it will focus on a specific sport or if it will be a compilation like Mario Sports Mix and Mario Sports Superstars. Perhaps more information will come to light in the next couple of months.
