Fans of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic-fantasy, The Lord of the Rings have a lot to look forward to in the near future. In addition to the upcoming Hobbit film directed by Peter Jackson, fans of the series may be interested in The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, a video game developed by Snowblind Studios. Keep reading to catch a glimpse of the new trailer and learn more about what War in the North has to offer.
War in the North is an Action RPG that returns gamers to Middle-earth and drops them smack dab in the middle of a quest to defeat Agandaur, Sauron’s top lieutenant, sent to the North to wipe out the Free People’s prior to the War of the Ring.
With such a formidable opponent, it’s good to have some allies around. As the trailer shows off, the game revolves around three adventurers who work together against Agandaur and his minions despite terrifying odds. The game heavily emphasizes the co-op experience and offers “innovative online, interdependent co-op play for up to three players who form their own Fellowshipâ€.
The fellowship of three – as Snowblind Studios refers to them – is made up of a male dwarf, a female elf, and a male human. The dwarf looks very much like Gimli from the Lord of the Rings films, but these three characters were developed specifically for War in the North.
The story of War in the North takes place parallel to everything in The Lord of the Rings and really digs into the idea of building upon an already epic world.
See for yourself in the new cinematic trailer embedded below.
From the start of the trailer, it is evident that Snowblind is set on delivering a realistically violent experience. With War in the North they embrace the grittiness of the subject material, and have no intentions to lessen the violence/gore. In fact, they seem downright pleased with the fact that their game is on track to be the first Lord of the Rings game to receive an M rating.
It’s hard to know exactly what to think of the game without any gameplay footage, but the initial impressions are good. Snowblind’s Action RPG pedigree is pretty impressive, marked by Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath. Hopefully, that experience will help make War in the North a well realized Lord of the Rings adaptation and solid Action RPG.
