LittleBigPlanet is easily one of the best platformers (only platformer?) that Sony has on the PlayStation 3, and its ‘Play. Create. Share.’ philosophy is one of the main reasons the series has done so well. Like all great platforming icons, however, it was only a matter of time before Sackboy took a step away from the monotony of continuously walking right, and proceeded to jump behind the wheel of a kart. Cue LittleBigPlanet Karting.
Many probably thought that Sackboy’s cameo appearance in ModNation Racers would have sustained the living doll, but it seems to have just given him/her/it the need for speed. This news comes from retailer Future Shop’s Future Shop Gamer twitter feed — the game having been revealed at the “Destination PlayStation” event last night. All tweets regarding LittleBigPlanet Karting have since been removed, but not before gaming site The Sixth Axis managed to secure an image that the same source posted.
According to the Future Shop Gamer tweets, LittleBigPlanet Karting will be PlayStation Move compatible. It will allegedly use a “Move compatible wheel,” so it’ll be interesting to see what the wheel-esque peripheral looks like when it’s eventually revealed. Furthermore, Sackboy’s debut racing title is said to also be “3D capable,” so PS3 owners with a 3D television can look forward to what we can only assume will b, eye-popping and immersive effects.
The most exciting prospect of LittleBigPlanet Karting will be a continuation of the ‘Play. Create. Share.’ motto that I referred to earlier. If the creative options are anywhere near as in-depth as the ones found in the platformer variations of the LittleBigPlanet franchise, then racing fans are in for a treat. If gamers have those options then it may be entirely possible to re-create a version of Twisted Metal with less blood and more rainbows, and deep, deep down that’s what every gamer really wants.
Of course, now that LittleBigPlanet is aiming to corner the kart racing market on the PS3, is there still room for ModNation Racers? A better question would be whether or not Media Molecule is behind the new game. They did say they were “stepping away” from the LittleBigPlanet property, after all.
