LittleBigPlanet 2 Amasses 6 Million User Created Levels

Though the initial excitement of LittleBigPlanet 2 might have died off a few weeks after the Sony exclusive’s release, fan created content helped keep the title going long after the Media Molecule created levels were left devoid of collectibles. In fact, in the case of LittleBigPlanet, fan created content far outweighs anything that Media Molecule could have hoped to put together in a couple years of development.

As announced on Twitter, LittleBigPlanet has now amassed some 6 Million user created levels, a staggering number to say the least. It was only just last year that LittleBigPlanet 2 hit store shelves, and since then the franchise has amassed another 2.5 Million Levels. While a small portion of those user-created levels are simply for trophy-obsessed gamers there is a much larger community who has taken Media Molecule’s tools and created some extremely engaging mini-games.

In our review of the game, we noted some of the community standouts among the dozen worthwhile levels, but since then, that number has blossomed beyond belief. Sure, Media Molecule has kept support for their project going through DLC costumes and level kits, but it’s really the community’s ingenuity that has made LittleBigPlanet 2 so successful.

LittleBigPlanet 2 Twitter Message 6 Million Levels

Despite this 6 Million level mark the future is still unclear for LittleBigPlanet the franchise and Media Molecule. While there is a Vita title in development, Media Molecule, who also in 2010 was rolled into Sony, is not heading up that project.

Still, the impact of community tools has definitely impacted several other Sony properties, most notably inFAMOUS 2, so even if they aren't making anything Media Molecule is still exerting their influence on video games. Perhaps if MM can incorporate that community-based interaction that has worked so well in LBP into a new project, they will see more than 6 Million user-created levels.

Have you created one or a few of the 6 Million user created levels in LittleBigPlanet? Would you like to see more community tools in games or is it something that you tend to ignore?
