A Lego Star Wars adaptation of The Force Awakens releases this summer and details have started leaking ahead of an official reveal that is planned for later on today.

Yesterday, Warner Bros. teased that an announcement featuring two of the most popular entertainment brands in the world was scheduled for today. As it happens, it seems like the cat has been let out of the bag a little earlier than intended — and the game in question is Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The fact that a new Star Wars movie was out in the wild meant that a new instalment in the brick-built video game series was always likely. However, similar to the upcoming Lego Marvel's Avengers, it seems that TT Games is happy enough to wait until well after the movie has left theaters to launch a video game adaptation.

Of course, the parody aspect of the Lego video game franchise could contribute to the gulf between releases. The brief trailer leaked today seems to be entirely comprised of cut-scene footage, most of which pokes fun at segments of the original trailer for The Force Awakens — Kylo Ren's malfunctioning lightsaber being a highlight.

It's interesting to see that The Force Awakens is being tackled as a standalone title, contrary to the previous Lego Star Wars titles that covered both previously released trilogies and the long-running Clone Wars television series respectively. However, this new instalment won't be short on content.

As well as covering the events of the movie, the game will reportedly feature exclusive story content that takes place in the time period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. A very similar strategy was used in Star Wars Battlefront, where players were given a taste of the Battle of Jakku.

The new game could dip into the popular Rebels television series currently airing, or even the new raft of expanded universe novels. Given that it comes out just a few months before the movie, we might even see some hints towards 2016's much-anticipated Rogue One spin-off.

For Lego collectors, one of the most appealing aspects of a new video game release is the promotional minifigure often offered as a pre-order bonus. While there's no confirmation just yet, it's rumoured that Stormtrooper Finn will be up for grabs alongside The Force Awakens.

There's plenty of reason to get excited about Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and fans will be eager for another instalment, given that it's been give years since the release of The Clone Wars. Given the enormous success of last year's movie, it's clear that force fever is in full effect.

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens is scheduled to release for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, 3DS and PC on June 28, 2016.
