Rumor Patrol: ‘LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes’ Coming in 2012

By | 4 years ago

Despite a steady stream of releases and gameplay that remains fundamentally the same from title to tile, the LEGO games are as popular now as they’ve ever been. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 has only been available for a few weeks, but rumors are already making the rounds about the next game in the series. It looks like a popular character will be making his return to the LEGO universe, and bringing a ton of friends along for the fun, in LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes.

It’s been a great year for the LEGO games, which kicked off with the March release of LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars. Traveler’s Tales followed that up with the even-better LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game, which made clear just how good-looking and playable the LEGO games have become.

Artwork for LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes was discovered and posted by LEGO fansite BrickTuts. The image clearly shows Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, while the site claims that Green Lantern and other DC super heroes will also make appearances. Take a look at the image below.

What do you think, Ranters, is this image the real thing?

The original LEGO Batman was something of an anomaly. As the only LEGO game (at the time) not specifically based on a film series, LEGO Batman came up short in the “recreations of iconic movie moments” category and as such, never became as popular as the LEGO Star Wars games. That could be an issue for LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes too, though the addition of a wide range of playable heroes should provide plenty of storytelling opportunities for Traveler’s Tales. If the developers manage to sneak in some references to The Dark Knight Rises or the Superman reboot, all the better.

Given the huge success of Batman: Arkham City, the time certainly appears right for another LEGO Batman. Plus, the gameplay opportunities offered by his DC pals (Superman must be able to fly, right?) could help take the series in fresh new directions. The LEGO games have a charm all their own, and despite the seeming simplicity of the formula — popular license plus silliness plus breaking stuff equals fun — it is remarkably difficult to duplicate. Just look to the recent Disney Universe for proof.

Ranters, what are your thoughts on LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes. Is it for real, and if so, what DC characters would you like to see included?

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is believed to be in development for all current systems, with a potential release date in 2012.
