The Official ‘Legend of Zelda’ Timeline Has Been Unraveled

Legend of Zelda Timeline
Release the doves and pop the champagne because someone has transcribed The Legend of Zelda timeline from Hyrule Historia, a 274-page art book celebrating the 25th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, that features concept and promotional art from throughout the franchises’ lifespan, including historical information on the games and the characters. Gamers can be at peace finally knowing the truth behind the chronological order of how the games should be played out.

Last week on December 21st, to cap off the celebration of Link’s 25th anniversary, Hyrule Historia hit store shelves in Japan (¥3,255/$41), and since then images have been sprouting up all over the place. The only problem here is that those who have been posting the images do not know how to speak/read/write Japanese. Luckily for us, one gamer has transcribed a particular YouTube video that focused in on the the official timeline for The Legend of Zelda. A Photoshop document of the timeline has been created in English to help those who would like to know how each game paves a path to set up this glorious franchise.

Many helpful Japanese gamers have uploaded pictures and videos of Hyrule Historia, making everyone stateside very jealous of its release. The video below hosts a 23-minute long preview of the art book, and those of you who dabble in Japanese may find it very insightful. At the 4:55 mark, the video gets into the timeline, giving a full picture of how the events of The Legend of Zelda unfold.

After that video had been published online, video game translator GlitterBerri went to work jotting down all that had been revealed into a working English translation. GlitterBerri created a rough Photoshop copy of the timeline, and with the help of another Zelda fan, remade the Japanese timeline in English in a more aesthetically pleasing version. Official Legend of Zelda Timeline

This timeline makes a very interesting conversation piece for any gamers at the dinner table. Many have speculated that after Ocarina of Time, the series’ timeline had split into two separate chains of events. Now we can all see that there is a third alternate universe that has been laid out after the events of OoT. If a Zelda spin-off game should occur, would it skew the very fabric of the timeline, or could it be made to coincide with the events of current timelines?

Ranters! Does this timeline of events make sense to you, and who’s ready to start playing The Legend of Zelda all over again from the beginning of the timeline to the end?

There is no official release date in the US or other countries for Hyrule Historia.

  1. the first zelda game i came close to beating was minish cap… and that was before skyward sword was ever announced. i say im pretty ahead of the curve when it comes to playing it chronologically :D

  2. In the picture, it says that in Majora’s Mask, Ganondorf is executed, and is not reincarnated until Four Swords Adventures. However, Ganondorf was in Twilight Princess, was he not? This was not explained in the visual timeline.

    • He may have been resurrected to lead the Shadow Invasion. Once he was defeated then, he would be reincarnated in Four Swords Adventures, yes?

      • I considered this, or perhaps he was an illusion caused by the Shadow Invasion. I don’t remember the game very well, I only played it once and It was when it came out. I didn’t really like it as much as others.

        • Perhaps… but i wouldnt know, i havent gotten very far in TP… was never as much into zelda… probly cuz it felt like there wasnt an overall story… but now i might be more into it because of this timeline :)

    • They tried to execute him but they failed as he had the triforce of power so they banished him to the twilight reals instead. The timeline just isn’t completely clear on that point but if you play through TP you get it.

    • actually, ganandorf was just sealed off in the realm, he didnt need to be revived. he was then sent off to the twilight realm, where some weird thing let him out, so ganondorf in OoT is the same a TP.

  3. Timeline makes no sense !
It’s the same game just sold all over again !

I love Zelda Games and I play them as long as I can remember,
but at least for me its pointless to try and make sense into something were no sense wa given to start from ,from the makers of the game !

It’s Biz,and its selling something that sales good !

  4. The whole “Hero is Defeated” Hero is Successful” thing throws me off. How does it split like that exactly at the end of Ocarina?

    • Alternate universes

  5. Just beat Skyward sword a couple of weeks ago, and have played/beat OOT, Majora’s Mask, WW, and TP, so I think I have a pretty good understanding of the Zelda Universe. My point here is that I don’t believe that a natural timeline was really intented in these games, aside from Skyward Sword. Yes, WW did have some hints to OOT of time, but “parallel universe” is just a sly and sneaky way of saying that the storyline was not planned out to fit; the games were for the most part just meant to be played out game by game.

Not that any of this really matters (although if they did really tie in better it would be pretty cool) because these are probably the best games out there ever; OOT is hands down the best game out there ever, even if your not into RPG’s.

What I would like to see is for the next Zelda game to try to somehow tie all of these games together. Perhaps have Lynk time travel back to different eras, and conscequently to the past games. Maybe we could Lynk revisit temples from past games and perform different tasks? Or have him fight/encounter Ganondorf from past games?

I think that if this type of game would leave the gamers speachless, it would certainly do so for me

  6. There could be a timeline were you lost to Ganondorf and Hyrule falls into an area of Decline. Maybe one of the game over really was a game over, Link lost and died.

  7. They are all wrong… god Minsih Cap can’t go before Ocarina because The Master sword is destroyed. idiots..

    • that wasnt the master sword… idiot…

    • In Minish Cap Link uses the “Four Sword” not the “Master Sword” they’re completely different swords

  8. This is one of the best explanaitions of the timeline that I’ve found. http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/zelda-official-timeline

  9. what about the CD-i games? I know they shouldn’t be taken seriously but I’m pretty sure everyone else would like to know also

    • Not considered canon as they were not created by Nintendo apparently.

  10. Myamoto has said there’s always been a timeline, just limitations on technology has constrained how he wanted the games to look. So yea there was always a timeline, just not put out there. Even if there wasn’t who cares, this is the best series ever created.

    • I’m actually kind of growing to like the idea of modern remakes of lttp and the first two NES games. That might actually be pretty sweet.

      • I would like to see a remake of the first two games in the style of LttP. That would be cool.

  15. Hey. i could have sworn the original maker of the game said somewhere (i heard it a few times) that a link to the past was after the original zelda games. if this is true then i guess this is false, but i guess i could have also heard wrong

  16. How in god’s name did they come up with this mess? ‘Skyward Sword’ INFORMS us it comes after ‘Twilight’, to make a start.

  17. WHAT.
