After the reveal of the PlayStation 4, many Sony fans were hoping to see the inevitable announcement of a next generation Uncharted sequel. However, before Naughty Dog can start generating legitimate Uncharted 4 buzz (likely at E3 2013), the developer still needs to shepherd a successful launch of their next potential game franchise, The Last of Us.

At the time of this writing, we've still got over two months before Sony's take on the fungal apocalypse hits store shelves and while many of the game's secrets remain unspoiled, the publisher has been releasing a steady stream of gameplay videos and story trailers to help keep anticipation high. Today we've got a "Red Band" story trailer (movie preview lingo for "explicit") along with a new TV spot that aired during the season 3 finale of The Walking Dead.

Check out the Red Band trailer for The Last of Us at the top of the page or below for the new TV spot (which is essentially a shortened and less violent cut). NOTE: The extended story trailer teased at the end of the TV spot is the Red Band trailer.

In keeping with prior marketing materials, the Red Band trailer does not provide much insight into the catastrophe that actually caused the post-apocalytpic world that protagonists Joel and Ellie are tasked with surviving (though we do know that it stems from an evolution of the cordyceps fungus). Instead, the trailer once again attempts to sell potential gamers on the core relationship and larger character journey of its two main heroes - while also showcasing the eye-popping visual fidelity in The Last of Us characters, "infected," and environments.

Gamers who picked up God of War: Ascension, have already had a chance to test-out the core gameplay, which definitely borrows from the Uncharted series; still, combat mechanics are not the primary reason that players have flocked to Naughty Dog titles in recent years - since players most often laud the studio's intimate storytelling and blockbuster set pieces. Judging by the trailers, The Last of Us looks to swap out some of Nathan Drake's more over-the-top adventuring for tense survivalist encounters - where hiding is preferable to going in guns blazing. However, this is Naughty Dog, so it's hard to imagine there won't also be a a number of explosive sequences for action-lovers.

The Last of Us VGA 2012 Trailer

Even if many of The Last of Us details are still a secret, plenty of gamers have already pre-ordered the title - on premise (and Naughty Dog pedigree) alone. At this point, the only real wild card in the package is the game's multiplayer component - which has only been teased. Uncharted 3 vastly improved on Uncharted 2's multiplayer offering but the online mode still falls short of being a must-play - especially compared to the ground-breaking single player experience. It'll be interesting to see if Naughty Dog can up the online ante with The Last of Us - and further details should be forthcoming in the run-up to release.
