While Guillermo Del Toro has enjoyed plenty of successes over the course of his career, it’s hard not to feel bad for the Spanish film director. First, Del Toro tried his hand at video game development with the project inSANE, but THQ’s financial struggles took that one out of commission rather quickly. Then, Del Toro teamed up with Hideo Kojima on Silent Hills – a project that seemed to be a surefire slam dunk – only to watch the game fizzle out after Kojima and Konami had their very public falling out.

Needless to say, few could blame Del Toro for swearing off video game development altogether. One epic failure is enough to scare even the most creative minds away, but two draws out talk of curses and such.

But, now that Hideo Kojima has found new life at his own studio, the appropriately titled Kojima Productions, there’s the potential that Del Toro may get a third chance. As Kojima revealed in a recent interview, he hopes to work with Guillermo Del Toro in the future, whether that be in the world of video games or even film.

News of Kojima’s future comes by way of an interview with IGN, in which the famed Metal Gear Solid creator was surprisingly forthcoming. Although he had been banned from appearing at The Game Awards earlier this month, Kojima clearly had a major public (re-)debut planned, wherein he would tease what fans can expect from him moving forward. As part of his "coming out party," Kojima talked about VR, his new PlayStation-exclusive project with Sony, and forays into the film world, and he even touched upon future collaborations with Del Toro.

"I have no idea what I’ll be working on with him, if it’ll be a game, a movie, anime, but someday I definitely want to create something with him."

Obviously, there’s a lot on Kojima’s plate at the moment, but the prospect of reuniting two very creative minds is promising. Heck, it was part of the reason fans were so excited about Silent Hills.

The bigger question now is whether or not the Kojima/Del Toro collaboration will take the form of a new video game or a feature film. We’re sure that fans would love to see the two resurrect P.T. in some form, but it’s unclear what legal leeway there is in that regard. Presumably Konami owns the rights to P.T. and therefore the new project would need to be starkly different in order to avoid legal action.

However, given Kojima’s penchant for long development cycles, we wouldn’t put too much stock in this collaboration surfacing any time soon. For now, Kojima’s focus is presumably on his PlayStation project, which is likely a few years away.

Would you like to see Del Toro and Kojima work together on a video game or a movie? Do you think Del Toro is cursed?
