Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Announced

Coinciding with their San Diego Comic Con panel, 38 Studios has released the first teaser trailer and screenshots for Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning. The open world RPG that has already garnered a ton of attention for having R. A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane on its creative team is looking fine.

Despite a very nice looking website for the Reckoning, scant details about the actual game can be found. My initial assumption was that the game would be very Oblivion-esque, but if you take a look at the screenshots you might see how I've changed my opinion.

Do you see what I mean? Just from these few screenshots you can tell that Amalur is a much more colorful and fantastic land than the world found in Elder Scrolls. Not just the ridiculously sized circus hammers, but the magical weapons and the awesome looking statues and architecture as well.

All they'd have to do to hook me right now is a gameplay trailer featuring some story, voice-acting and some combat. It doesn't even need to be that great, I'm just excited at the idea of exploring an open world from these creative talents. Morrowind and Oblivion were both incredible experiences, but it's no secret that single player open world RPGs are still in their infancy. It will be great to see what sort of new direction 38 Studios will take Reckoning in.

Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning is scheduled for a Fall 2011 release for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Stick around for more news as it hits.
