Jeremy Renner, anchor of two franchises with his turn in the Mission Impossible films and his forever-role as Hawkeye in the Marvel cinematic universe rung in the New Year by nearly dying under his snow cat at his Reno, Nevada home causing blunt trauma to his chest as well as orthopedic injuries (read: his legs), putting the 52-year old in critical condition.

Renner’s family has shared an update with People magazine on the beloved actor’s condition, with the actor’s sister saying that the action star is “crushing all the progress goals” in perhaps an awkward turn of phrase but one that speaks to hopefulness.

The Marvel universe hero is reportedly making huge progress on the road to recovery. Whether or not Renner will ever be an action star again is up to fate to decide, but the star is working hard at hitting his targets. Said his sister, Kym Renner: "We are so thrilled with his progress. If anyone knows Jeremy, he is a fighter and doesn't mess around. He is crushing all the progress goals. We couldn't feel more positive about the road ahead." This is wonderful news for fans of the actor who has been hospitalized since January 1 of this year.

The actor has been keeping fans up to date with his progress so far, with his first entry being a thank you letter to fans, noting that he wasn’t able to type (a sad irony for the creator of the Jeremy Renner app), and this was followed a couple of days later with a jokier entry showing his sister massaging his head while his mom was in the room and calling it an “amazing spa day.” So far Renner appears in good spirits, the huge outpouring of love from the fans keeping him buoyed and mentally on the right track for nailing all of his current health goals.

Renner joined the MCU as Hawkeye, the character created by Stan Lee and Don Heck who first appeared as a supervillain before joining the Avengers. His first cinematic appearance in the MCU was when his character appeared in The Avengers. Through the subsequent sequels and spin-offs, his character bounced back and forth between saving the world, returning to his farm, and, briefly, becoming an international assassin who specialized in murdering gangsters during the blip. Afterwards he cleaned up the mess left behind by his rash actions, taking Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) under his wing to begin her training as the new Hawkeye.

Hawkeye is streaming on Disney+.
